Vol. 17 — No. 21 MARCH 4, 1975 BETHLEHEM, PA. LU Matmen Crush Rivals In 71st EIWA Tournament Would You Believe 7 Champions? Lehigh wrestlers turned the 71st EIWA tournament into a shambles last weekend at Annapolis, Md., sweeping honors during an incredible performance in which all opposition—including powerful Navy—was swept aside with unbelievable authority. Coach Thad Turner's fired-up grapplers, nailing down their No. 1 eastern and No. 6 national rankings, left Halsey Fieldhouse with EIWA tourney records for most team points (172V2), most finalists (8) and most champions (7). In a few of the more outstanding accomplishments co- captain Terry DeStito became the first man ever to win the Fletcher Trophy twice, co- captain Mike Frick received a second Most Outstanding Wrestler award and Mark Lieberman—only a freshman— became the first Engineer star to take the Sheridan Trophy. The Fletcher award goes to the man scoring the most career LEHIGH coach Thad Turner with team trophy and seven.. .that's right, seven.. .Engineers who won individual titles in the 71st EIWA tournament. Frick, DeStito and Mark Lieberman completed the greatest team performance in EIWA history by claiming the three top individual trophies. points for his team in EIWA tournament competition. The Sheridan award is for the man getting the most falls. It's named after the great Lehigh coach, Billy Sheridan, but until Saturday no Engineer matman had been able to win it. Frick, who won Most Outstanding honors two years ago as a freshman 118-pound champion, took the trophy this season at 134 following a 16-8 rout of national place winner Rande Stottlemyer, of Pitt, in the title round. In the semis he whipped Jack Schoonover of Army, 10-2, avenging a pin at Schoonover's hands last month.
