Vol. 18 — No. 6 OCTOBER 21, 1975 BETHLEHEM, PA. Sterrett, Weaver Lead Lehigh Past Delaware Engineers Top Hens By 35-23 Lehigh's explosive offense destroyed a highly-ranked defense Saturday, for the second week in a row, as the Engineers rallied to outscore Delaware before 21,105 spectators by a 35-23 margin. The Engineers maintained their position as the second- highest scoring team in Div. II national statistics with a five- touchdown barrage triggered by the superb passing of quarterback Joe Sterrett. Lehigh footballers now have a 5-1 record with their sights firmly set upon the Lambert Cup and a berth in this year's NCAA Div. II national playoffs. Going into Saturday's contest the Engineers were third in the Lambert race behind unbeaten Massachusetts, and once-beaten Delaware, and striving to break into the Top Ten in Div. II national rankings. Delaware was ranked eighth nationally. Massachusetts won again, 23-7 over Rhode Island, so it remains to be seen how highly the Lambert rating committee boosts Lehigh, either into second or first position. The first rather direct comparison b'tween Lehigh and Massachusetts will be possible Saturday, in Taylor Stadium, when the Engineers face Maine. Massachusetts shut out the Black Bears this year, 10-0. Fred Dunlap, Lehigh's head coach, refuses to be drawn into talk of ratings or national playoffs but he won't disagree with anyone who claims his Engineers are the strongest Div. II team in the East. "Our goal is to finish the season 10-1," he says. "If we're able to win 10 games I believe everything will fall into place automatically. But that's looking too far into the future. Right now we're concentrating on our next two opponents, Maine and Colgate." It's safe to assume, too, that Lehigh's Mark Weaver Goes 97 Yards On Kickoff Return Maine is thinking about its impending visit to Taylor Stadium on Saturday. Lehigh's eye-popping victory at Newark, Del., which threw a blanket of gloom over a Blue Hen homecoming day turnout, firmly established the Engineers as one of the nation's top Div. II powers. Sterrett, the senior quarterback from Wallingford, Pa., who has developed into a more-than- adequate successor to Kim McQuilken and Joe Alleva, had a brilliant day in which he completed 20 of 27 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore halfback Mark Weaver caught two of these scoring tosses, on plays covering 10 and 18 yards, and raced 97 yards on a kickoff return to account for three TDs against the stunned Hens. Junior tight end Larry Henshaw, of Hammonton, N. J., caught the other Sterrett touchdown pass, covering 23 yards. Sophomore halfback Dave Aprill, of Fords, N. J., ran 35 yards off right tackle for Lehigh's opening touchdown.. Delaware's not-so-jolly blue giants came out of the game with a statistical advantage based largely upon domination during the first quarter. The Hens (4-2) piled up a lot of yards, shut off the Lehigh attack, and generally gave indications of taking full charge. They could Game Films Thursday Home Club films of the Lehigh victory over Delaware will be shown at Hotel Bethlehem Thursday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m. with narration by head coach Fred Dunlap. Alumni and guests are urged to attend. Get The South Mountaineer The South Mountaineer is being sent to alumni via different classes of mail this fall. The decision, caused by rising costs, was made by the directors of the Alumni Assn. at the spring meeting and announced by Jim Niemeyer, executive director. The Mountaineer will continue to be sent at no charge to alumni, upon a request to the Alumni Office. The standard method of delivery, however, is non-profit (third class) mail. Alumni wishing to receive it via first class mail should remit $4 for 1975-76. The rate for foreign airmail is $7. only score once, however, on a 7- yard pass from quarterback Bill Zwaan to tight end Rich Fugazzi, as the Lehigh defense bent but refused to break. Hank Kline kicked the extra point, and added a 41-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter, for a 10-0 Delaware lead which looked mighty big at the time. At this point in the game Lehigh had a net of 15 yards and was still looking for a first down. Sterrett broke the first down ice on the first play following the ensuing Delaware kickoff, connecting with fullback Rod Gardner of Maplewood, N. J., on an 18- yard screen pass. He found split end Bobby Liptak of Yonkers, N. Y., on a short pitch and then fired 21 yards to Henshaw as the Engineer offense finally began to hit its stride. Two plays later Aprill hit the right side, glanced off a pileup and found enough daylight for his 35-yard scoring run. When Greg Pierog kicked the first of five extra points the Engineers trailed only 10-7 at 2:55 of the second quarter. Lehigh lost a golden opportunity a moment later when defensive tackle Stan Fendryk of Greene, N. Y., recovered a fumble in Delaware territory and a major penalty put the ball on the Blue Hen 12.
