Southern Illinois, ESSC, Wilkes, Maryland Easy For LU Matmen Mike Lieberman, McCorkel Spearhead Early Attack As Engineers Rout Rivals LEHIGH'S BOB SLOAND registers a 4:59 pin over Bill Schoy of Maryland at Grace Hall. The referee is Spike Israel. Cagers Drop 2 Contests LaSalle and Delaware hopped on Lehigh for a pair of basketball victories last week. The tall, Big 5 Explorers visited Grace Hall and returned to Philadelphia with an 89-66 triumph. The Blue Hens were on top, 102- 65, in an East Coast Conference opener at Newark, Del. Charley Brown, of Morristown, N.J., continued to be the Engineers' most consistent scorer as he notched 14 points against LaSalle and added 24 against Delaware. Lehigh's junior varsity hammered Northampton Community College, 94-50, with six players in double figures. Charley Skender, of Harrisburg, Pa., led this Canceled A basketball game scheduled for Grace Hall Saturday night, Dec. 14, between Lehigh and the Kings Point, N.Y., Merchant Marine Academy, has been canceled at the request of the Mariners. Lehigh's JVs, slated to play a preliminary against the Montgomery County Community College, will be in action but the site and time of the game have been changed. It will be played at Blue Bell, Pa., at 2 p.m. assault with 16 points and Larry Chatzinoff, of Oceanside, N.Y., had 15. Deadlocked at 13 were1 (Continued on Page 2) Home Club Fetes Athletes, Coaches At Fall Dinner Four most valuable players and six 1975 captains were announced at Lehigh University's annual fall sports banquet Dec. 2. Nearly 400 athletes, university officials, alumni and members of the media gathered in Windish Hall to hear the five coaches of fall sports briefly discuss their seasons. The dinner was sponsored by the Lehigh Home Club, the athletic department and the university's alumni association. Mike Bolton, Home Club president, was the toast master and Frank Hrkach was dinner chairman. Football co-captain Jim Addonizio, a senior safety, was voted MVP by the players. The John Maxwell Award to the top cross-country performer was presented to East Coast Conference champion Wayne Rogers, the lone graduating senior from John Covert's ECC and IC4A champions. Chosen co-captains for next year were Dave Cope and Elliot Michael. The MVP for coach Helen Bond's field hockey team was Helen Barr who was also elected co-captain of next year's team with Anne McGregor. The Morrison Award for the top soccer player went to senior co- captain Hank Kelly. Chosen co-captains for next year's team were Jose Perna and Jim O'Donnell. Heading the speakers were Dr. Deming Lewis, University president, and Bill Leckonby, Lehigh's director of athletics. Fla. TV Six television stations of the Florida state network will be added to the extensive coverage of Lehigh athletics this winter. A list of 25 eastern educational TV stations, featuring these events, was carried in the Nov. 25 South Mountaineer. The Florida outlets will highlight five wrestling meets, the Lehigh— Czechoslovakian basketball game and the EIWA wrestling tourney finals. Showing the Lehigh- Czech basketball game Dec. 14 and the Lehigh- Iowa wrestling meet Dec. 28, at noon, will be WJCT, Ch. 7, of Jacksonville, and WFSU, Ch. 11, of Tallahassee. WEDU, Ch. 3, of Tampa, has a 1 p.m. air time while 4 p.m. showings are scheduled by WPBT, Ch. 2 of Miami, and WMFE, Ch. 24, of Orlando. WSRE, Ch. 23, of Pensacola, will air the basketball Dec. 28 and the wrestling in January. A complete schedule of the Florida showings will be included in next week's South Mountaineer. Viewers are urged to contact their educational TV outlets to verify times and dates. Don McCorkel of Hershey, Pa., and Mike Lieberman of Allentown, Pa., were the big winners as Lehigh wrestlers opened their 1974-75 schedule with impressive victories over Wilkes, 27-9, Southern Illinois, 35-3, East Stroudsburg, 29-6, and Maryland, 29-5. Only Wilkes, a perennial Middle Atlantic Conference title contender, proved troublesome. The Colonels split their first six bouts against the Engineers before Lehigh swept the last four to make their first invasion of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., a profitable one. Southern Illinois, East Stroudsburg and Maryland joined Lehigh in a weekend quadrangular at Grace Hall and the Engineers chalked up 25 victories and a draw in 30 bouts to easily turn back the three visiting squads. The only surprise was Lehigh's 32-point margin over Southern Illinois. The Salukis, coached by Linn Long, came to Bethlehem after chasing Navy down to the QUAD TEAM RESULTS Lehigh 35, S. 111. 3 ESSC 18, Maryland 17 Lehigh 29, ESSC 6 S. 111. 19, Maryland 18 Lehigh 29, Maryland 5 S. 111. 21, ESSC 14 wire in a dual meet at Annapolis before losing, only 17-14. McCorkel and Lieberman each racked up four victories. Only other Engineers seeing action in all four tests were 150-pounder Mark Stauffer of Hummelstown, Pa., (0-4) and 158-pounder Jeff Duke of Lancaster, Pa. (2-1-1). McCorkel opened at heavyweight against Wilkes and disposed of Al Scharer, 6-2. He then moved to 190 and won over Marv Martin of Southern Illinois by a fall in 1:15, Mike Stam- baugh of East Stroudsburg, 8-1, and Ron Train of Maryland, 6-0. Mike Lieberman, at 177, ripped Dave Gregrow of Wilkes, 10-2, Jay Friedrich of Southern Illinois via disqualification when the latter was ejected for refusing to wrestle, Darwin Brodt of East Stroudsburg, 6-1, and previously- undefeated Kevin Johnson of Maryland, 11-5. Close behind Mike Lieberman and McCorkel, in the victory column, were three Bethlehem, Pa., grapplers, 118-pounder Lance Leonhardt, 126-pounder Marty Lynn and 142-pounder Pat Sculley, all 3-0. Lehigh coach Thad Turner used 17 men during opening-week activity, and only four of them were beaten in a total of 40 bouts.
