Trackman Ties University Record DeStito, Frick Elected Captains Sam Scott, a freshman from Barbados in the West Indies, made an auspicious start with Lehigh's trackmen March 17 during an all-comers meet at Carrollton, Ga. He finished second in the 100 with a 9.7 to tie the Engineer record for that event. Dave Johnson of Troy State, Alabama, won the race in 9.6 and Jimmy Dutt, a Lehigh freshman from Temple, Pa., placed fifth in 9.9. The meet climaxed a week of drills for the Engineers at West Georgia College. Jon Kilroy of Shaker Heights, O., and Elliot Michael of Millwood, N. Y., had firsts for Coach John Covert's Lehigh squad. Kilroy took the 880 in 1:58.2 and Michael won the mile in 4:20.8. Jef Mitchell of Wayne, Pa., was fourth in the 880 in two minutes flat and Dave Koons of Oreland, Pa., finished fifth in 2:00.8. In the mile, behind Michael, were Stellan Thoren of Sweden in 4:26 and Steve Thatcher of St. Paul, Minn., in 4:30.6 good for second and fourth places, respectively. Jim Abeltin, of Pittsford, N. Y., took seconds in the shot (49-4) and discus (149-1). Mike Green of New York City, placed fourth in the long jump with a 21-3% try and Pete Johnson of Darien, Conn., was fourth in the triple jump with a 43-11 effort. All of the competitors in the meet were hampered by strong, gusty winds. John Vargo of South Plainfield, N. J., (184-5) and Otis Sinnott of Bronxville, N. Y., (162-10) were third and fifth, respectively, in the javelin. John Woynarowski, of Reading, Pa., was third in the 3-mile in 14:54. Lehigh's mile relay team of Koons (52.6), Thoren (52.4), Al Dance of Brooklyn, N. Y., (49.9) and Kilroy (50.3) was second in 3:25.2. The 440 team of Dutt, Green, Dance and Scott was leading in the finals until dropping a baton. The quartet won its heat in 43.5. TOM SCULLEY with national sportscaster Jim McKay of Wide World of Sports which plans to show NCAA wrestling this weekend. This is the first issue of The South Mountaineer since March 5. The next publication date is April 23. Ace For Lehigh Golfer John Coles, a sophomore from Mt. Pleasant, Mich., fired a hole- in-one during a 36-hole tryout tournament conducted by Coach Roy Heckman of the Lehigh golf squad at Green Pond. He used a seven iron for his ace on the 145- yard, par-3 sixth hole. His total was 81-75—156 for sixth place. Tom Sine, Engineer co-captain from Yardley, Pa., won the tournament with a 75-73—148. Seven Lehigh golfers, headed by Coach Roy Heckman, spent March 9-13 at Santee, S. C, playing 36 practice holes a day and participating in a match with the University of South Carolina (Conway) at Quail Creek. John Coles of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and Joe Andriole of Hazleton, Pa., were low Lehigh medalists with 79s. En route home the Engineers played a match in Wilson, N. C, against Lynchburg, Va., College, North Carolina Wesleyan and Atlantic Christian. Tom Porsch of Grove City, Pa., led Lehigh with a 74. Glenn Strow of Ambler, Pa., and Kirk Houser of Cham- bersburg, Pa., fired 76s. In unofficial scoring the Engineers defeated Lynchburg and N. C. Wesleyan while losing to South Carolina and Atlantic Christian. A spectacular performance by undefeated Tom Sculley, at 134 pounds, highlighted Lehigh's efforts in the 1974 NCAA Wrestling Tournament at Ames, Iowa, March 14-16. Sculley won five bouts to take title honors in his division, becoming the Engineers' 12th NCAA title-holder. Among them they hold 15 crowns. Lehigh grapplers performed well in the Nationals, capturing 15 of 23 bouts. Mike Frick, 126, of Hamburg, N. J., finished fourth to join Sculley on the 1974 All-America squad, an honor which automatically goes to place- winners in the national tournament. . Sculley's route to the title included victories over Wayne Jackson of Kansas St., 10-4, Mark Sanderson of Brigham Young, 6- 3, Conrad Calender of Mich. St., 7-6, Billy Davids of Michigan, 2-0, and Jim Miller of Northern Iowa, 4-3. Miller had eliminated defending champion Don Rohn of Clarion in the semi-finals, 5-4. Frick's title hopes vanished in his second bout, against Bob Antonacci of Iowa St., when he was pinned during overtime while leading 2-0. They battled to a 5-5 draw in regulation time. The Lehigh star then won four straight consolation bouts before dropping a 7-2 decision to John Fritz of Penn St. for third place. Frick boasts dual meet victories over both of the 126-pound finalists, champion Pat Milkovich of Mich. St. and runnerup Billy Martin of Okla. St. Other Lehigh entries were Bobby Sloand of Landing, N. J., at 118, Terry DeStito of Enola, Pa., at 177, Don McCorkel of Hershey, Pa., at 190 and George Barkanic, heavyweight from Parryville, Pa. Sloand and McCorkel, freshmen, split six bouts. In Sculley's title victory over Miller the Engineer star broke the scoring ice with a reversal 35 seconds into the second period. Miller escaped but Sculley came back with a takedown to lead 4-1 at the end of the stanza. Miller escaped again after 30 seconds of the last period. With half-a-minute to wrestle Sculley was penalized a point for stalling to make the final score 4-3. "I wasn't backing off," said the Lehigh champion. "I just wasn't shooting. Lehigh Tops EIWA Entries Lehigh matmen have won 15 national championships, tops among Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Assn. (EIWA) teams. Lehigh's ranking is No. 6 on the all-time list. Tom Sculley, Lehigh's newest NCAA champion, was among title winners honored at the 50th annual Lewis wrestling banquet March 27 at Saucon Valley Country Club. Sculley, who captured 134- pound laurels at this year's national tournament at Ames, Iowa, joined Johnny Engel (1931), Ben Bishop (1934), Howell Scobey (1936), Henry Matthes (1939), Harold Masem (1940), Eddie Eichelberger (1955 and 1956), Joe Gratto (1957), Ed Hamer (1959), Kirk Pendleton (1963), Billy Stuart (1965) and Mike Caruso (1965,1966 and 1967) on the list of Engineer NCAA champions. Engel, Bishop, Hamer and Caruso were at the dinner along with a group of EIWA winners including Robert (Bull) Watson of Washington, D.C. Watson and Dick Suppes won Lehigh's first EIWA titles in 1913. Brothers Robert (Dick) and Al Lewis, who host this banquet first initiated by their father, R.A. Lewis, in the 1920s, invited all of Lehigh's NCAA and EIWA champions to the 50th anniversary gathering. Dr. Deming Lewis, Lehigh president, headed speakers who lauded the title-winners along with other members of the 1973-74 Engineer varsity,, Engel took the occasion to formally present his 1931 NCAA title medal, first ever captured by a Lehigh grappler, to the University, Terry DeStito of Enola, Pa., and Mike Frick of Hamburg, N. J., were elected co-captains of the 1974-75 Engineer varsity squad. DeStito and Sculley captained this year's team.
