(Continued on Page 2) Alleva Leads Engineers Past Bisons; Leopards Idle An outstanding performance by senior quarterback Joe Alleva, of Suffern, N. Y., paced Lehigh to a convincing 33-7 rout of Bucknell last weekend as the Engineers (6-3) chalked up their fourth straight victory. A crowd of 10,300 watched in Taylor Stadium as Alleva passed for three touchdowns and scored one to turn back the Bisons (2-7). The contest was Lehigh's final outing before the 110th game against Lafayette—in college football's most-played rivalry- Saturday at Easton, Pa., when the kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m. The Leopards (3-6) have lost their last four starts. They were idle Saturday. Lehigh, which took command of Davidson one week earlier with a 31-point second quarter, unloaded against Bucknell with a 20-point outburst in the same period for a 20-0 halftime advantage. When fullback Rod Gardner, of Maplewood, N. J., ran 58 yards on the first play of the second half to set up a fourth TD it was all over for the Bisons. Final statistics are very misleading, indicating a close contest, when in reality Lehigh held a firm upper hand from the second stanza until the finish. The visitors piled up a lot of yardage between the 20s but couldn't score until Kerry Snow found Mike Pensabene on a 37- yard pass in the fourth quarter. Lehigh's defensive platoon, led by linebacker John Healy of South Orange, N. J., safetyman Jim Addonizio of New Shrewsbury, N. J., and tackle Stan Fendryk of Greene, N. Y., excelled for the third straight week. In the first chapter an interception gave Bucknell the ball on the Lehigh 38 but the Bisons were halted at the 17 and came up with a zero when a field goal attempt missed the mark. In the second a wild center pass, on a punting situation, resulted in a poor kick and the Bisons took possession at the Engineer 20. Four plays later they relinquished the ball at the 19. The defense sparkled in the recently-completed home stand as Lehigh downed Gettysburg, 14- 6, Davidson, 53-6, and Bucknell, 33-7, allowing only 19 points. The second quarter heroics found the Engineers moving for touchdowns on marches of 45, 56 and 58 yards with most of the damage coming through the air. Alleva completed eight of 16 tosses in the period for 114 yards and touchdown strikes of four yards to tight end Mike Lechner and nine yards to wingback Bob Handschue. Gardner had the other TD on a plunge. Any Bucknell hopes of a second half comeback vanished on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter as Gardner fought loose on his 58-yard jaunt to the Bison 13. Alleva added seven yards off the right side, tailback Mike Chieco of Manhasset, N. Y., contributed five and Alleva tallied through left tackle on a keeper. Chieco was subbing for freshman star Mark Weaver who sat out the second half after suffering an ankle injury. Coach Fred Dunlap hopes he'll be ready for Lafayette but a decision may have to wait until gametime. Following Bucknell's only touchdown the Lehigh eleven retaliated immediately with a 72- yard drive to complete the afternoon's scoring. Aided by a pass interference penalty the Engineers reached the Bison 25 and Alleva pitched the ball to Gardner who found a lot of daylight in a dash down the right sideline into the end zone. Gardner, although carrying the ball only nine times, led Lehigh on the turf with 80 yards. Bob Langan matched that for Bucknell but needed 16 tries. Weaver was off to a good day with six carries for 36 yards when he was injured in the second quarter. This was Lehigh's fourth in a row over Bucknell and the fifth triumph for the Engineers over the Bisons in the last six tries. The following message from Bill Leckonby, director of athletics at Lehigh, has been included in each mailing of tickets for the 110th Lehigh— (Continued on Page 2) TV Scheduled WLVT-TV, Channel 39 of Bethlehem, will televise the 110th Lehigh-Lafayette football game Saturday from Easton, Pa., for delayed viewing. Channel 39 will show the game one day later, Sunday, Nov. 24, beginning at noon. WITF-TV, Channel 33 of Hershey, Pa., will feature it Sunday, Nov. 24, at 3:30 p.m.
