L U Swimmers Edge Delaware, R utgers Vol. 15 — No. 18 FEBRUARY 6, 1973 BETHLEHEM, PENNA. Cagers Bidding For Playoff Berth Navy Matmen Shade Engineers MacGregor Sets Pace For Mermen Alan MacGregor, of Edison, N.J., paced Lehigh swimmers to victories over Delaware, 56-55, and Rutgers, 58-55. Points: Riflemen Win Lehigh riflemen racked up their seventh victory in eight starts at the expense of Kutztown, 1335—1204. Ken Miller's 275 paced the Engineers. Randy LaFollette was close behind with 273. LEHIGH'S Terry Martin drives in for layup during 68-66 victory over Gettysburg in Grace Hall. Upset Win Over Gettysburg Helps Scramble MAC Race Funny things happened Saturday to teams on their way to playoff spots in the Middle Atlantic Conference's western division. Lafayette, Delaware, Gettysburg and Bucknell went into action tied for first place and only the Blue Hens survived a rash of upsets. Last-place Lehigh contributed to the fun, stunning Gettysburg 68-66 at Grace Hall, while Lafayette dropped a 60-58 verdict to visiting Rider. Delaware outlasted Bucknell in double overtime, 91-83. The victory climaxed a frustrating week for the Engineers who dropped an earlier non-league thriller at Muhlenberg, 73-72, and a conference decision at Rider, 69-63. Saturday's results turned the playoff battle into a free-for-all scramble with every team, including Lehigh, still very much in the running for the two playoff berths which go to the western section. Delaware is on top with a 3-1 loop mark. Lafayette, Bucknell, Gettysburg and Rider are all locked one game behind at 2-2. Lehigh, 1-3 in the league, is very much alive. The Engineers get a chance to further scramble things tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb. 7) when they host Lafayette at Grace Hall in a game to be telecast for delayed showing by WLVT-TV, Channel 39 of (Continued on Page 2) GETTYSBURG Groves 2-0-1-4, P.Clark 2-5-6-9, Gyuiai 3-1- 1-7, Morgan, 1-0-0-2, J.Clark 6-2-3-14, Raf- ferty 0-0-0-0, Speier 7-8-14-22, Thompson 4-2- 2-10. Totals: 24-18-27-66. LEHIGH Martin 4-0-0-8, Liedtke 1-2-3-4, Brown 4-1-2- 9, Wisniewski 6-3-5-15, Belfield 3-0-0-6, Lambert 5-1-4-11, Rubenzahl 7-1-1-15, D'Agosta 0-0-2-0, Zelickson 0-0-1-0. Totals: 30-8-18-68. Halftime: Lehigh 31-27. Middies Take Final Bouts For 21-15 Dual Triumph Navy won the last two bouts of a thrilling dual meet Saturday to hand Lehigh grapplers their fifth loss in 16 outings, 21-15, before a capacity turnout of 3,000 spectators in Grace Hall. The Engineers, who haven't beaten the Middies since 1967, put forth a valiant effort but the defending Eastern Assn. champions (8-4) managed to take six of the 10 bouts. It was a close scrap, so close that one more takedown in the heavyweight finale would've sent the teams into the locker rooms in an 18-18 draw. Freshman George Barkanic couldn't get it, though, against senior Mark Salmen of the Naval Academy. He dropped the bout, 6-5. Each team benefited from some particularly brilliant performances. Lehigh's top jobs were turned in by Tom Sculley at 134, as he pinned Fred Hahndorf in 4:23, and Craig Reimer at 158 as he upset Bob Hartman, 11-4. Other Engineer victors were superfrosh Mike Frick over fellow freshman Lance Leonhardt in their 118-pound leadoff bout, 7-1, and Mike Lieberman's 7-4 triumph over Harold Loerch at 177. Frick, of Hamburg, N.J., became the first Lehigh wrestler ever to win more than 12 dual meet bouts in a season. He has a 13-1 record with three duals left in Lehigh's expanded schedule. Engineer aces of the past never had a chance to wrestle more than 13 times in dual tests. Most of them had only 12. Navy's most impressive winners were Dan Muthler at 142 over Kim Hagedorn, 11-3, and Jeff Simons at 190 over Terry DeStito, 11-4. Other Middie wins were contributed by Ken Berger at 126 over Randy Biggs on a hotly- disputed near-fall ruling by referee Pascal Perri, 7-5, captain Ross Chaffin on a 3:36 fall over freshman Dan Santoro at 150, John Christensen at 167 over Glenn Grant, 9-5, and Salmen over Barkanic at heavyweight. Grant, a replacement for injured regular Bucky Dixon, did well against Christensen but couldn't match the Navy veteran's efforts. Perri's near-fall call against Biggs, as the Lehigh senior at tempted a rollout from underneath, brought a howl of protest from the partisan Lehigh crowd. It didn't seem too costly early in the bout, as Berger stepped out to a 5-0 lead, but eventually it proved decisive as Biggs rallied in the final period. Coach Thad Turner, of Lehigh, weighed both Leiberman an DeStito in at 177 prior to the meet and sent Lieberman out at the lighter weight against Loerch (3- _ 4-1) -while saving DeStito for Simons (9-1-1) in an attempt to sweep the crucial 177 and 190 bouts. DeStito, a runnerup at 167 last year in the Easterns and a regular competitor at 177 this season, didn't have enough size against Simons who wore him down badly in the third session. DeStito led 4-2 at one time but was struggling to avert being pinned at the finish. This left it up to the heavyweights and Salmen, calling upon four years of experience on the Navy mats, had just a little too much for his freshman opponent. Sculley, pressing Frick for the team lead in victories, fell behind 4-1 against Hahndorf but rallied (Continued on Page 2) NAVY 21, LEHIGH 15 118—Mike Frick, Lehigh, dec.
