Defensive 11 Shines During 23-0 Victory Over Bucknell Offensive heroics have held the spotlight most of the 1971 football season at Lehigh, during an all-out assault on the record book, but Saturday was a day for the defense at Bucknell. The Engineers hung the first shutout of the season on the Bisons, 23-0, while completely dominating the action. Bucknell could get only 10 first downs, 86 yards on the ground and 43 in the air, and quite a bit of that came late in the game against reserves. It was an encouraging display by the Lehigh defensive platoon which had been left hanging on the ropes by Colgate and Delaware on successive weekends. The triumph, Lehigh's seventh against three losses, set the stage for Saturday's 107th tussle against Lafayette. The Leopards, 5-4 <m the yefrr, were battered 51-14 last weekend by Colgate. There wasn't anything wrong with Lehigh's offensive statistics at Lewisburg, Pa., as the Engineers rolled to 21 first downs and 440 yards, but the attack bogged down in touchdown territory several times because of fumbles, interceptions, penalties and an occasional key defensive play on the part of the Bisons. Don Diorio plunged three yards for Lehigh's first TD. JackRizzo took a screen pass from Kim McQuilken and dashed 41 yards for the second. McQuilken tallied the third on a quarterback sneak and Chuck Merolla added a 24-yd. field goal and two conversions. Almost the entire game appeared to be played on the Bison end of the gridiron with Lehigh moving into threatening position time and again while Bucknell's offense couldn't get started and the losers were forced to punt 10 times. Engineer defenders concentrated on quarterback Howie Burke and fullback Mitch Farbstein of the Bisons, lettermen who led Bucknell to a 24-20 triumph over Lehigh in 1970. Burke could complete only one of 11 aerials, for nine yards, and was minus four yards on 16 rushing attempts. Farbstein, who scored five touchdowns in a 33-0 Bucknell rout of Lafayette, was held to 75-yards on 21 tries. End Mike Impink and safety man Mark Mitravich were particularly outstanding in the defensive effort. Impink took away Burke's favorite running area on option sweeps and Mitravich intercepted a pass, blocked a field goal and knocked down a pass in the end zone just as a receive" was ready to haul it in. Lehigh's Big Three on offense . . . running backs Diorio and Rizzo along with quarterback McQuilken, had productive afternoons. Rizzo carried the ball 21 times for 106 yards and Diorio was 19 for 105. McQuilken completed 10 of 21 aerials for 201 yards/Neither Rfzzo nor Diorio saw much action during the late part of the game, both suffering minor injuries which aren't expected to hamper them against Lafayette. Rizzo's touchdown gave him a school record 17 for the year, one more than Dick Gabriel registered in 1949. The Engineers scored the second time they had the ball at Lewisburg, moving 47 yards following Mitravich's pass interception. McQuilken's 21-yard pitch to Bill Howard was the big gainer while Rizzo and Diorio tore out consistent chunks of yardage. Diorio darted across from the four and Merolla missed the conversion. Lehigh led, 6-0. In the second period Rizzo took a screen pass from McQuilken, broke loose and ran 41 - yards Into the end zone. Merolla's kick made it 13-0 and the score remained that way until the Engineers added 10 points in the fourth quarter. An intentionally short punt by John Rhoads, downed by John Hill on the Bison one-yard stripe, put Bucknell in deep trouble and , (Continued on Page 2) Frosh End Season In Style l*wo quick touchdowns, early in the first quarter, catapulted Lehigh to a 21-0 triumph over Lafayette last Friday in the freshman football finale for each team. The game was played at Fisher Field. Coach Barry Fetter man's Little Engineers, impressive all year, concluded the campaign with a 5-1 record. Lafayette was 0-5. Phil McCarthy recovered a Leopard fumble ;:; > .:ome team's 43»2'ard line at the start of the contest and Lehigh' moved to the 26 when quarterback Joe Alleva completed a key fourth- and-six aerial to Mike Lechner. Tailback Dan Ruppert did the rest, picking up nine yards in two tries before breaking loose on a 17-yard scoring dash through right tackle. Minutes later Jim Poeter recovered another Lafayette bobble ... this one on the Leopard 36, and Alleva immediately fired a pass into the end zone ^n^rr split end Bob Hanaso^ ':):r the ball away from a defender. Lehigh 'ed, 14-0, while some fans still were moving to their seats. The Little Engineers settled down after that as the game turned into a punting duel with neither club able to move consistently. Finally, late in the third quarter, Lehigh pulled itself together for a 79-yard TD drive. Ruppert got the touchdown, in the last period, on a 32-yard burst through right guard. Ruppert was the day's leading runner with 15 carries for V3 2 yards and Ms ::a;r ot scores. Alleva completed five af 13 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Each team registered 10 first downs.
