The South Mountaineer Published by the Lehigji University Alumni Association VOL. 14 - NO. 5 OCTOBER 12, 1971 LU Routs Rutgersf35-14 BETHLEHEM, PENNA. Third In Row For Engineers Over Scarlet Rizzo, McQuilken, Diorio Leaders; 93-Yard Return Lehigh's explosive offense uncovered its greatest point outburst against Rutgers of modern times Saturday during an impressive 35-14 rout of the Scarlet before 12,000 fans at New Brunswick, N.J. It was the Engineers' fourth victory in five games as the team charges toward its first winning football season since the Lambert Cup year of 1961. Only one other Lehigh team ever -scored—as----many point s against Rutgers, in the 68-game series going all the way back to i884, and there aren't too many fans around who watched that one. It happened in 1896 when Lehigh ran up a 44-0 victory during a 2-5 campaign. The other win came over the Maryland Athletic Club, 26-0. There were losses to Princeton, Pennsylvania, Brown, Michigan and Navy. On only three other occasions has Lehigh broken 30 against the Scarlet, winning 30-0 in 1888, 34-0 in 1902 and 33-13 in 1954. It was the third straight triumph over Rutgers after a string of 11 consecutive losses dating back to 1957 when Lehigh won 13-7 to complete a 6-game streak of victories in the series. Rutgers maintains a 38-29-1 overall advantage. The Scarlet battled on even terms with the Engineers for half the game Saturday but Lehigh Booters Edge Delaware, 1-0 Mike Perlow's penalty kick, with 11 minutes remaining in the third period, gave Lehigh a 1-0 soccer triumph over Delaware last Saturday. Coach Tom Fleck's Engineers (2-1-1) once again exhibited a very strong defense featuring all star goalie Joe Strickland, but had trouble on offense. Lehigh has scored five goals in four games while yeildingonly two. In the third quarter Lehigh received the kickoff and marched 75-yards in 15 plays to move ahead for the third time in the game, 21-14. Two plays after the ensuing kickoff a fumble recovery gave the Engineers possession again and they moved 66 yards to make it 28-14. These were superb ball control drives in which Lehigh used up virtually all of the time in the period. Rutgers ran only two plays in the entire quarter against 29 for the Engineers. Fullback Jack Rizzo and tailback Don Diorio ripped off consistent gains on the ground. In the first TD drive McQuilken passed nine and 16 yards to Rizzo, three yards to John Aylsworth and 10 yards to Bill Schlegel. Diorio broke loose on a 16-yard draw and Rizzo ran the same play for 10 yards. With the ball on the 17 Rizzo took one of McQuilken's tosses and rammed his way to the one. Diorio knifed across. On Rutgers' second play after the kickoff tailback Larry Robertson broke free on a run from his own 29 to the Lehigh 34 only to fumble when hit by Mike Barth. Defensive halfback Frank Kail recovered and Rutgers never had the ball again in the quarter. McQuilken completed four straight aerials, 15 yards to Schlegel, five to Diorio, eight and 11 to Rizzo as the Engineers moved downfield. Again, as in the quarter's earlier assault, Rizzo and Diorio consistently ripped loose on the ground for vital yardage. With the ball at the 19 and Rutgers desperately trying to defend against the pass, Lehigh tallied in five ground plays. Rizzo gained nine over the middle, Diorio picked up three at the same spot, Rizzo gained two and Diorio four to the one. Diorio scored through left tackle with three seconds left in the qyarter. Rutgers made one last effort to get back into the game, moving from its 32 to the Lehigh six for a first down early in the final session. At the six, however, the Scarlet crumbled. Ed Jones lost a yard and Robertson was held without a gain in line thrusts. Coach Barry Fetter man's Little Engineers were in full c ontrol throughout, never allowing Rutgers to get inside the Lehigh 35-yard line. On Lehigh's first play from scrimmage tailback Dan Ruppert of Middletown, N.Y., burst 65 yards through left tackle to the Rutgers 10. The drive was halted but Al Choinere, of Owigsburg, Pa., kicked a 21-yard field goal. The Engineers scored again the second time they had possession, going 35-yards following a short Scarlet punt. Sheard's 22-yard pass to fullback Scott Moore, of Ocean, N.J., produced the touchdown. Moments later a poor pass from center, on a Rutgers punting attempt, resulted in Lehigh regaining the ball at the Scarlet 28. Sheard passed to Chip Allison of Chappaqua, N.Y., on the nine, and then to Moore for another TD. At the start of the third period the Engineers made it 24-0 as Ruppert slashed 18 yards off the right side. Moore added eight and Sheard lofted a ball 50-yards to Allison for the touchdown. Choinere added the three extra points. Lehigh alternated four units, two on offense and two on defense with three different quarterbacks getting a chance to work. Joe Alleva of Suffern, N.Y., the No. 2 signal-caller, distinguished himself as a punter. He averaged 45-yards a kick with two of his boots better than 50-yards. In the third period he had a 35-yard scoring pass to Allison nullified because of a penalty. RUTGERS. ..0000—0 LEHIGH. ... 17 0 7 0—24 Leh—FG 21, Choinere. Leh—Moore 22, pass from Sheard.
