Hutchinson, DeStito Top Matmen Cagers Drop 3 Contests Lehigh University's basket- bailers, who opened their season stunning LaSalle in the Penn Palestra, 69-64, and followed with a 61-60 triumph at Gettysburg, fell into a slump last week. The Engineers dropped contests to Bucknell, 78-69, Colgate, 102-91 and Delaware 84-64, Coach Roy Heckman's charges hosted Bucknell in their first home start of the campaign. They moved out front during the first half, 22-17, but trailed at the intermission and never caught up although the Bisons' advantage was only 52-49 with 10;50 remaining. Bucknell was red hot in the second-half, scoring 16 field goals on 19 tries. Many of them were layups as the Bisons broke free from a pressing Engineer defense. Hank Wisniewski of Rochelle Park, N.J., led Lehigh against Bucknell with 19-points and 17 rebounds. In a preliminary contest the Lehigh frosh outscored Somerset County, N.J., Community College 8 2-79, Mike Hohman of Pittsburgh, Pa,, led the winners with 18 tallies. JOHN HILL National, Regional Honors For 1971 Gridiron Stars Seven Lehigh football stars, headed by All-American center John Hill of Somerset, N,J., have gained national and regional honors this season. The Engineers won eight times in eleven starts, under coach Fred Dunlap, for their best year Mermen Rip Delaware To Remain Unbeaten, Untied Alan MacGregor of Edison, N.J,, had a hand in two wins and diver Rick Long of Souderton,Pa,, turned in his best performance to date as Lehigh's unbeaten swimming team dunked Delaware 73-50. MacGregor won the 200-yard butterfly in 2;06 flat and also was part of the 400-yard medley relay team which won in 3:50.4, Long broke 200 points for the first time in his career in winning the three-meter dive with a total of 246,8. 400 medley relay - 1. Other Lehigh men accorded honors this year included fullback Jack Rizzo of Weston, Mass., defensive end Mike Impink of Reading, Pa,, quarterback Kim McQuilken of Allentown, Pa,, linebacker Blake Johnstone of Mountainside, N.J., safetyman Mark Mitravich of Dubois, Pa., and split end John Aylsworth of Huntington Valley, Pa. Hill, a pre-season All- American choice in Playboy and Game Plan national magazines and mentioned in a New York Times feature on possible Heisman Trophy candidates, lived up to all expectations and is regarded as a probable early round professional draft pick. The pro scouts will get another look at him Dec, 31 when he plays in the East-West Shrine game at San Francisco, Calif. No other Lehigh lineman ever was selected to play in this contest. Each has a perfect 3-0 mark. They were double winners last week as the Engineers whipped Cornell, 30-3, after being held to a 16-16 draw at the University of Maryland. Freshman Jeff Duke of Lancaster, Pa., turned in a big victory over Cornell veteran Glenn Wanck in their 142-pound bout, 8-6, after being upset two nights earlier by Russ Reid of Maryland, 4-0. Duke has won twice in three outings. Still another freshman, 150 pounder Dante Caprio of Livingston, N.J,, got into action as a replacement for injured veteran Herb Campbell and reeled off a pair of impressive victories. The former N.J, state champion whipped Dave Strauss of Maryland, 10-3, and Dale Porter of Cornell, 4-3. Lehigh had no difficulty at Cornell last Saturday after leadoff grappler Marty Lynn dropped the opening bout. Coach Thad Turner's squad won the nine matches which followed Coach's Comments "I think the quadrangular tournament will give us a true line on our potential. Quadrangular Mat Tourney At LU Friday, Saturday One of the strongest fields ever assembled for a quadrangular wrestling tournament at Lehigh will be on hand Friday and Saturday (Dec. 17-18) in Grace Hall. Oregon State, 18-2-2 last year and fourth in the Nationals, Pittsburgh and Indiana State, the latter arriving from Terre Haute, Ind., will join Lehigh in the two- night matfest expected to attract capacity audiences. Gerry Leeman, former head coach of the Engineers and now director of special sports events at Lehigh, is in charge of the tournament. Competition begins at 7 p.m, each night following a blind draw for first-round opponents. This will be the third such tourney hosted by Lehigh, long a citadel of eastern intercollegiate wrestling, in three years. Two seasons ago Oklahoma won with 83 points against 72 for Lehigh, 36 for East Stroudsburg and 25 for Springfield. Last year Lehigh finished first with 87 against 55 for Southern Illinois, 52 for Wilkes and 43 for Maryland. Early sentiment this winter appears to favor Oregon State but the Beavers certainly will be pushed hard by Pitt, Indiana State and host Lehigh. Each team will enter a man at each weight.
