EIWA Test Next Fo ^ NOV 26 1973 RARY atmen Title Bouts On Television WLVT-TV, Channel 39 of the Lehigh Valley, will tape the final round of the annual Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Assn. championships Saturday (March 6) at Annapolis, Md., for delayed viewing. The title bouts are to be shown Sunday, March 7, at 4 p.m., following an "Inside Lehigh Wrestling" show hosted by Kirk Pendleton. Shel Siegel, executive vice president and general manager of Channel 39, will join Larry Sheridan in describing the action, Siegel and Lehigh public relations director Sam Connor originated these EIWA tourney telecasts several years ago. Connor will be at the tournament in his capacity as official scorer for the Fletcher and Sheridan memorial awards. Channel 39 also will produce a 90-minute special on the title round for 27 stations of the Eastern Educational/Public TV Network. This highlight version is to be shown Sunday, April 4, at 4 p.m. Channel 39 will feature the show along with the other eastern network outlets. Broadcasts Scheduled Radio station WGPA-FM of Bethlehem will broadcast all sessions of the EIWA Tournament Friday and Saturday, Mar. 5-6, from Annapolis, Md. Jud Smuil and Dr. John Lux will describe the action. WLRN, the Lehigh University student station, also will be on hand for the torunament with sports director Howie Frisch at the microphone. Weekend Action at Navy; Rutgers Wrestlers Blanked SCOTT, CHRISTIE of Lehigh controls Rich Rhinehart, of Rutgers, during 177-pound bout won by the Engineer senior, 6-1. Rhine hart's brother, John, is a member of the Lehigh varsity mat squad* Christie, EIWA runnerup last year at 190, finished dual campaign with 7-1 record. With The Alumni Lehigh alumni in the Washington, D. C, and Baltimore areas, will hold a dinner Saturday, Mar. 6, in conjunction with the annual Eastern Intercollegiate Wrest!-' ing Assn. championships at the Naval Academy. The Washington Lehigh Club is sponsoring the affair, scheduled for the Annapolis, Md., Hilton. Six-foot-seven Greg Falkenbach played his greatest game against Gettysburg, with 30 points and 23 rebounds, to help the Engineers fashion an 84-68 advantage. Six-foot-nine Fred Bechtel took charge at the University of Rochester as Lehigh shocked its hosts with a 111-64 blast, scoring 25 points including 11 field goals in It shots. Between those outings the Engineers were defeated at Lafayette, 115-83, despite a 26 point show by Johnny Waters. Lehigh's frosh cagers split a pair of decisions, losing to Gettysburg for the second time, 77-76, and downing Lafayette for the second time, 82-66. At Rochester, last Saturday, the Engineers stunned the home club with early leads of 10-1 and 24-7, and never eased the pressure. Bechtel didn't miss the target all night. In addition to his 11-11 field goal performance he converted three free throws in three tries and blocked five Yellow- jacket shots. Lehigh led 52-28 at halftime. Halftime: Lehigh 52-28 Officials: Kane and stietz Lehigh's 19th consecutive winning wrestling season concluded as expected last Saturday as the Engineers tuned up for this weekend's EIWA tournament with a 34-0 rout of Rutgers before 2,900 spectators in Grace Hall. In a junior varsity meet, held at Taylor Gym, Lehigh posted a 24-15 triumph. Coach Thad Turner's squad swept every bout against the Scarlet to dump Rutgers for the 24th time in 25 meetings. The 1971 Eastern Tournament, Friday and Saturday (Mar. 5-6) at the Naval Academy, is next on the schedule followed by the District '2* NCAA qualifying tournament one week later (Mar. 12-13) at Princeton. Turner's lineup for the Easterns probably will include Randy Biggs at 118, Greg Surenian at 126, Dave Waters at 134, Jack Scharff or Todd Morgan at 142, Herb Campbell at 150, Rick Bacastow at 158, Steve Shields at 167, Scott Christie at 177, Tom Hutchinson at 190 and Bob Lustica heavyweight. All except Surenian and Morgan got some sort of workout against Rutgers. Biggs, leading 3-0 over Rutgers' top wrestler, Dennis P. Smith, picked up a default triumph in the second period when the latter suffered a broken ankle. The injury occurred as Smith twisted the ankle trying to contain Biggs when the Lehigh sophomore stood up and broke free. Ricky Mitzner replaced Surenian at 126 for this meet, piled up a big early lead and held off Scott Myers for a 12-9 decision. Surenian was given an extra week to rest an injured arm. Waters, at 134, pinned Nate Granger in 6:53 during a onesided romp and the five-pointer gave him the Lehigh team seasonal point championship with 30 tallies. Steve Shields, at 167, finished with 29 after decisioning Dan Brandenburg, 10-1. Scharff, working at 142 as a replacement for injured captain Dave Icenhower, came from behind to trim Clarence Johnson, 6-2. Other Engineers who sharpened up for the Easterns with easy victories included Campbell., 11-0 over Dennis M. Smith; Bacastow, 6-0 over Mike Maugeri; Christie, 6-1 over Rich Rhinehart; Hutchinson, 10-2over Bill Reinstadler, and Lustica, 10-3 over Bob Morton* Rutgers concluded its dual season with a 3-7-1 record in Dick Voliva's Silver Anniversary year as head coach. Coach's Comment "Everyone's talking Navy and Penn State for the Easterns, but don't count us out toe quickly. We have enough good men to make it interesting if we just get a break here and there.
