Published by the Lehigh University Alumni Association Vol. 15 — No. 12 I December 4, 1972! V BETHLEHEM, PENNA. Cagers, Wrestler s HANK WISNIEWSKI (20) gets off hook shot against Rochester during 64-58 victory at Grace Hall. Other Engineers are Hal Lambert (22) and Paul Hartzell. Second-Half Rally Boosts Engineers Past Rochester A come-from-behind triumph over Rochester, 64-58 Saturday night in Grace Hall, gave Lehigh's cagers their first scalp of the season after a pair of setbacks. It also marked the first college coaching victory for new mentor Tom Pugliese who earlier had seen his charges bow to East Stroudsburg State, 65-60, and LaSalle, 75-59. Some 1,200 spectators watched the Rochester game and saw the Engineers rewarded with a hard- earned decision as they kept pressuring the visiting Yellow- jackets for the full 40 minutes. Rochester, in its first start of the campaign, jumped away from an early 8-8 stalemate to grab a six-point margin at 16-10. The Jackets still led by six, at 43-37, with 13 minutes left in the game and Lehigh battling grimly to stay close. The Engineers kept plugging, with Pugliese getting fresh troops onto the floor from time to time, until they came up with a nine point string to move ahead 56-51 with four minutes remaining. Hank Wisniewski of Rochelle Park, N. J., launched this burst with a layup and Terry Martin, of Cliffside Park, N.J., pushed Coach's Comment "It's awful nice to get that first win under your belt, as a new coach. I've been encouraged by the team. The young men are learning a new system, working very hard, and coming along."... Tom Pugliese, basketball. in a one-hander to tie the score at 51. Sophomore Hal Lambert, of New Brunswick, N.J., produced a vital three-point play on a layup and foul conversion, and then added another basket for the 56-51 spread which was Lehigh's first lead of the contest. Another deuce by Lambert made it 60-53, with 1:15 left, and a basket by Wisniewski extended the Engineer margin to eight at 64-56 in the final seconds. This was the biggest margin held by either team in the closely fought thriller. Lee Barthold, Home Club president, was toastmaster for the affair held in Windish Hall. Among the speakers were Paul Franz, vice president for development at Lehigh, and Bill Leckonby, the University's director of athletics. Head coaches Tom Fleck (soccer), Fred Dunlap (football) and John Cq\ert (cross country) briefly^ reviewed_ their reasons and introduced members of their squads. Morgan Cramer, national alumni association president, was among the guests. Captains for next season were named including Tom Klonick, Bill Altenpohl and Hank Kelly, soccer; Wayne Rogers and Jim Barnes, cross country, and Kim McQuilken and Roger McFillin, football. Three victories by falls, and another by a disqualification, helped Lehigh's wrestlers bombard Lock Haven State in the opening dual meet of the season Saturday, 38-5, before 4,000 spectators in Thomas Fieldhouse on the losers' campus. It was a surprisingly onesided triumph for Coach Thad Turner's young, rebuilt Engineer varsity and it shocked the standing-room-only audience. Two years ago Lehigh won there in a 19-17 thriller. Saturday the issue never was in doubt as the Engineers dropped only one of the 10 bouts, and tied Runners Crack Top Ten Lehigh's cross country runners, fresh from capturing Middle Atlantic Conference and IC4A championships, competed in the National AAU tournament at Chicago Nov. 25 and finished a very respectable ninth against a strong field of Olympians and NCAA standouts. Olympic star Frank Shorter took individual honors while leading the Florida Track Club to first place. NCAA champion Neal Cusack of East Tennessee State placed first but was dropped to fourth when he inadvertently took a shortcut on a course where lines where obliterated by a snowfall. Shorter covered the 10,000 meter route in 30:42 with Ed Leddy of East Tennessee State » second and Jack Bachelor of the Florida Track Club third. Tim Steele of Denville, N. J. topped Lehigh's entries with a 32nd place spot in 32:12. Wayne Rogers of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., followed in 33rd place. Jim Barnes of Denville was 60th with Brian Faraci of Haver straw, N.Y., 64th, Rick Bourie of Springfield, Mass., 65th and Dave Cope of Fogelsville, Pa., 70th. There were 379 athletes in the race representing 52 teams. Mike Lieberman (190) of Allentown, Pa., picked up the disqualification triumph when his opponent was ejected for refusing to wrestle. Frick, a 3-time N.J. state champion and the most exciting Lehigh prospect to don the Brown and White since Mike Caruso in 1964, made his debut a memorable one as he rolled up an 18-0 lead before flattening Ben Shipman in 7:29 with a reverse cradle. Shipman also is a freshman. This gave the Engineers a quick 6-0 advantage and the capacity crowd, which had just finished cheering Lock Haven to a 24-15 preliminary junior varsity triumph, got a taste of what was to follow. Reimer disposed of Bob Nagy in 4:05, also with a reverse cradle, and Dixon took care of Don Adams in 4:27 with a double bar and body press.
