Lehigh Crushes Delaware Berger, Rizzo Lead Offense During Stunning 36-13 Rout LEHIGH quarterback Jerry Berger (17) on one of the many option runs with which the Engineers destroyed Delaware defenses. Blockers include John Hill (56), Ted Hill (64) and Dave Gill (89). Runners Win 10th Straight Tim Steele, Bob Detrick. Roger Jackucewicz and Mike Strockbine tied for first place as Lehigh's cross country runners blanked Columbia, 15-48, in New York. John Heil of the Engineers was fifth. It was the 10th straight triumph for Coach John Covert's forces following an opening loss to Pennr and it set the stage for a major clash Thursday (Nov. 12) against unbeaten Lafayette in Easton. The Leopards have won 11 in a row, Steele and Co. covered the 5- mile route at Columbia in 25:55.7 as Lehigh posted its eighth shutout of the campaign, Lehigh's frosh also downed the Lions, 28-29. Lehigh's football team put it all together Saturday and came up with one of the Engineers' most impressive victories of modern times, 36-13 over a highly favored Delaware eleven rated first in the East among medium sized colleges and eighth in the nation. The Hens, charging toward a third straight Lambert Cup and beaten only by Villanova (34-31) in seven earlier outings, were completely outplayed by an underdog Engineer squad which took charge in the first quarter and never eased the pressure. Quarterback Jerry Berger and fullback Jack Rizzo were the brightest stars on offense although the entire forward wall must share in the credit. Berger's running of an option series opened up the Hen defense and helped Rizzo gain repeatedly on thrusts through the middle. Rizzo picked up 134 yards in 3 2 carries and Berger made 74 yards in 19 tries in addition to completing three passes for 25 yards, Each completion meant a first down, Don Diorio carried 14 times for 70 yards and Jack Paget made 59 yards in only four attempts. Berger, Rizzo and Diorio each tallied on short runs and Paget scored on a 47-yard end sweep after taking a pitchout fron Berger. Kicking specialist Ron Schattenberg did his thing, too, with four conversions and field goals of 20 and 31 yards for a 10- point afternoon. The extra two markers were privided by linebacker Mike Barth as he completed Delaware's humiliation for the day by throwing quarterback Sam Neff in the end zone on a desperation passing attempt. The safety was one of many highlights provided by a Lehigh defensive unit which brought to a halt one of football's greatest Diorio Okay Lehigh halfback Don Diorio, after being taken to St. Luke's Hospital following the Delaware game as a precautionary measure, was reported okay on Sunday. He suffered a concussion against the Blue Hens. running attacks, Delaware, leading the nation in rushing yardage, was forced into the air when its runners couldn't break loose. The Hens netted only 131 yards on the turf, against 375 for the Engineers, with Bill Armstrong's 12 for 82 the leading individual effort, Fullback Chuck Hall, Delaware's seasonal leader, carried nine ti me s for only 22 yards. Among the defensive standouts was halfback Garry Scheib who intercepted a pass to halt a Delaware threat during the third quarter, made several key open field tackles, and returned a punt 5 3 yards to set up a field goal. Safetyman Dennis Stock turned in vital stops, the Front Four of Mike Ellis, Mike Impink, Ed Romanow and Tom Benfield, and a linebacking corps led by Tom Shaughnessy, Blake Johnstone and captain George Nicholson was outstanding, Delaware's vaunted ground attack was choked off to such an extent that the Hens (6-21 moved starting quarterback Jim Colbert out to split end, replacing him with Neff who is a better passer, Colbert caught a pair of TD passes, for 17 and two yards, but even this stepped-up aerial threat failed to shake Lehigh's (4-41 defense against the rush, Rizzo, Berger, Paget, Eric Waldman, Diorio and Bob Nixon were the Lehigh ball-carriers benefiting from crunching work up front from ends Dave Gill, Bill Howard and John Aylsworth, tackles Tom Marti, Howard and Price Gielen, guards Keith Huzyak, Ted Wells and Brian Derwin, and center John Hill, Lehigh's first touchdown in the opening quarter came on a 46 yard drive of 11 plays, Rizzo's 14-yard end sweep was the big run with Berger turning in three key gains and completing a short pass to Aylsworth, With the ball at the nine Waldman picked up three yards, Paget added three Rizzo made one and Berger rolled through right guard on fourth down for the six points.
