Colgate Outscores Lehigh, 121-12 Frosh Eleven Raps Bucknell Halfback Mike Bowers scored twice and quarterback Kim McQuilken passed for a pair of touchdowns Saturday as Lehigh's freshman football squad bombarded Bucknell 34-14 in the Saucon Valley "bowl." It was the second high-scoring effort for the yearlings in as many weeks, following a 42-0 frosh parents day blitz at the expense of East Stroudsburg. The Little Engineers (2-1) have rebounded strong after an opening loss at Rutgers, 19-9. Friday afternoon they meet Penn in Philadelphia. Bowers plunged three yards in the first period to give Lehigh a 6-0 advantage, finishing off a 25-yard drive. After the Baby Bisons tied the score Lehigh moved 60-yards in seven plays to regain the advantage. McQuilken passed the last 26 to Jim Wheeler and Chuck Merolla's conversion made if 13-6. Later in the same quarter McQuilken fired a 32-yard TD aerial to Don Gallo for a 20-6 halftime edge. In the third session, with Bucknell frantically guarding against the pass, Lehigh sent Bowers 66 yards on a draw to make it 26-6. Tackle Glenn Pedersenthen nailed a Bucknell runner in the end zone for a safety. Cross Country Champs First In Canisius Invitational Run Lehigh's cross country champions swept honors in last weekend's Canisius Invitational run at Buffalo, N.Y., topping a field of 24 colleges and universities. The Engineers were charged with only 32 points to finish well ahead of runnerup EdinboroState (87) and third place Alleghney (131). Other top squads included Brockport (138\ Buffalo State (178), Cortland (191), Roberts Booters Turn Tide, Regain Hopes of Winning Campaign Continuing a stubborn climb toward the .500 mark, Lehigh's varsity soccermen tied Rider, 1-1, and whipped Fordham, 4-1, bringing their seasonal record to 3-4-1. They are at home twice this week, facing Lafayette Wednesday and Swarthmore Saturday before finishing on the road against Rutgers and Bucknell. The trip to Buffalo followed a dual meet shutout over Gettysburg on the Saucon Valley Fields, 15-48 , in which Coach John Covert gave his starters a chance to rest up for the weekend grind. Jack Collins took first against the Bullets followed in order by teammates Jack Reynolds, Sean Ryan, Mitch Evans and Larry Powell. The winning time was 25:58 over five miles. The dual summary; 1. Engineers, Down 14-12, Halted After Drive In Last Period Colgate, fighting off a late Lehigh surge in the fourth quarter, struggled to a 21-12 victory over the Engineers before 4,600 fans Saturday at Hamilton, N.Y. The favored Raiders led all the way but Lehigh stayed close and the outcome wasn't decided until 14;26 of the final period when Colgate notched its third touchdown on a fumble recovery in the end zone. Fullback Steve Morgan, running from the Engineer five, was hit hard and the ball bounced free across the goal line where teammate Rick Kay recovered it for an insurance TD. This score completed a 71-yard drive in the final minutes after Colgate, battling to safequard a 14-12, advantage, halted the Engineers on the 29-yard line. Lehigh, which moved the ball very well all afternoon against the Raiders^Jiad marciied from its 10 to the Raider 30 before being halted. Quarterback Jerry Berger, halfbacks, Jack Paget and Don Diorio, and fullback Jack Rizzo appeared almost unstoppable on this assault as they tore out sizeable chunks of yardage on almost every attempt. After gaining a first down on the Colgate 39 the Engineers continued their impressive drive as Rizzo slammed into the line for four yards and Paget added five up the middle. It was third- and-one at the 30 when Paget was nailed twice for no gain in thrusts into the line. Placekicking specialist Ron Schattenberg was ready for a field goal try if Lehigh had been able to pick up this vital first down and advance another eight or nine yards. Only a few minutes remained in the tense struggle when the Raiders regained possession and moved downfield on a 22-yard run by Morgan and a 29-yard pass, (Continued on Page 2) Wrestlers Open Season Dec. 5 Twenty-seven wrestlers, including five lettermen, have begun work under new coach Thad . Turner at Lehigh for a campaign which opens Dec. 5 at Lock Haven State College. Turner, a former Engineer captain and champion, takes over the squad as the successor to his ex-coach, Gerry Leeman, now an assistant to director of athletics Bill Leckonby. Leeman, a member of college wrestling's Hall of Fa me, enjoyed 18 winning seasons in 18-years, In 1969-70 the Engineers had a fine 10-3 record. Turner returned to his alma mater after a highly successful coaching tenure at Phillipsburg, N.J. High School. Lehigh will wrestle nine dual meets during the 1970-71 schedule along with hosting a quadrangular tournament and participating in Eastern Ass., District and NCAA tournaments.
