The two-time Eastern Assn0 champion pinned his rival in the third period for his 15th straight dual meet triumph. Cagers Outscore Bucknell Captain Bob Fortune paced Lehigh's basketball team to a 75-66 triumph over Bucknell for its initial win of the season after losses to Army, 74-61, and Temple, 73-70. Coach Roy Heckman's squad returns to action at Colgate Wednesday (Dec. 10) before making an anxiously-awaited home debut Saturday (Dec. 13) night in Grace Hall against Washington and Lee. Fortune, with 25 points at Bucknell, increased his team- leading total to 54 for the first three games. He has 22 field goals and 10 foul conversions. Playmaking guard Johnny Waters is second with 42 markers on nine field goals and 24 of 28 free throws. Another guard, Scott Beeten, is third with 15 field goals and one foul for 31 tallies„ Bucknell Victory Fortune scored 19 points in the second half as Lehigh came from behind to knock off Bucknell in the Middle Atlantic Conference opener for the Engineers. Bucknell matched baskets with Lehigh much of the first half, and pulled away to a 30-26 halftime lead on a pair of quick baskets by Bob McKernan. Lehigh began to cut into the slim lead, however, and went ahead to stay 40-39 with 12 min^ utes to play. The Engineers built a 63-48 lead with five minutes to go, but Bucknell applied a fullcourt press and scored 11 points in succession to trim the margin to63-59. That was as close as it got, however, as Waters and Rick Etra started hitting on foul shots to pull out the victory. Fortune received big assists from Waters, who had 15 points on three field goals and nine fouls, Mike Drew with 13 points and Beeten with 10- Fortune and Greg Falkenbach gave Lehigh control of the boards as the Engineers outrebounded the Bisons 51-35. Falkenbach was particularly impressive in the Mermen Break Records In First Meet of Year Sophomores Bob Sine and Phil Hogan set two school records Saturday as Lehigh dropped a 5 2-48 decision to Colgate's swimmers. Sine was first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:14, more than a minute better than the old Engineer record. He also was first in the 500-yard freestyle flat in 5:25 to set another Engineer mark. Hogan was first in the 50-yard freestyle to set a school standard of 22.1 and finished the first leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay in 49.4 for a university 100-yard freestyle record. Despite his fine performance in this last event of the meet, Colgate still won in a time of 3:24.2 and in so doing gained enough points to make its season debut a success. Pete Harding was also a double winner for the Engineers, in their season opener, as he was first in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:28.4 and swam the second leg of Lehigh's winning 400-yard medley relay. In the shooting department, Bucknell was 26-60 for 43 per cent. Lehigh was better as it made 27 of 61 for 44 percent. In the freshman game Larry Lloyd scored with 20 seconds left to give the Little Engineers a 72-71 edge. Loss at Te mple Lehigh put everything on one shot with one second remaining in a 71-70 contest and came away the loser at Temple. The Engineers pulled to within one point with 16 seconds remaining and froze the ball for the final shot. Fortune's attempt failed, and Temple's Tom Wieczerak was fouled under the basket as the buzzer sounded. He sank both his shots from the line. Both teams played an even contest for the first eight minutes as the score see-sawed back and forth. Temple finally began to out rebound the Engineers and break their defense as the Owls gained a 15-point lead, 44-29, at the half. The Engineers battled back behind the strong shooting of Beeten and Fortune and the rebounding of Falkenbach. Beeten (Continued on Page 2) Strong Rally Turns Back PACChamps Falls by senior co-captain Jack Bentz, and sophomore Herb Campbell, sparked Lehigh to an auspicious 1969-70 wrestling debut last Saturday before 3,450 spectators in Grace Hall. The Engineers whipped Lock Haven State College, 22-12, handing the defending Pennsylvania Athletic Conference champions their first loss in two years. Lock Haven, a longtime power in small-college mat circles, swept the first three bouts before Lehigh turned the tide and won handily. Despite the absence of injured lettermen Dave Waters, Rich Bacastow, Scott Christie and Art Rutzen the Engineers fielded a lineup which won six of the 10 bouts and added four bonus points on the pair of pins. 15th Straight Win Bentz, chalking up his 15th straight dual meet triumph, disposed of Don Connelly at 6:42 of their 177-pound bout to give Lehigh its first lead of the night, 16-12. Campbell, in his first varsity bout, stunned Craig Sholl of the Bald Eagles with a fall in 3:35 after overcoming a 4-0 deficit at 150 pounds. This sliced Lock Haven's big early advantage to 9-8. Winning decisions for the Engineers were Jay Leeman at 142, Steve Shields at 167, Al Nicusanti at 190 and Gary Leinberger, heavyweight. Leeman's triumph, 2-1 over Paul Brodmerkel, was on time advantage after the matmen had traded escapes. It was an impressive victory and it came when the fired-up visitors, already ahead 9-0, were threatening to pile up an insurmountable margin. Once Jay applied the brakes to Lock Haven's early rush the Engineers took charge. Penalized for Stalling Campbell, after being taken down and yielding an early predicament, reversed near the end of the initial period and again at the start of the second. He added a predicament of his own, gave up a reverse as the score reached 6-6, then escaped and took Sholl to the mat for the first time. He gained a reverse half nelson and pressed his rival's shoulders to the mat as the overflow crowd stood and roared. Shields defeated Bill Rhodes, 4-3, in a bout which found the Lock Haven junior being penalized a point for stalling and another for refusing to properly assume the down position at the start of the final period.
