The Lehigh-Navy meet, wrestled Feb. 8, was shown Friday (Feb. 14) on WQLN. The Lehigh - Pittsburgh attraction, scheduled for March 8 at Lehigh, will be featured Friday on the Erie TV outlet, March 14. Lehigh basketball fans enjoyed their biggest night of the season when Lafayette came to Grace Hall. Engineer freshmen whipped a highly-touted group of Leopard Cubs, 83-67, and the varsity handled its visiting rivals with even greater ease, 81-59. Bob Fortune, named all-East one day earlier for brilliant performances against Bucknell, N.Y.U. and Gettysburg, picked up the tempo against Lafayette with a game high of 24 points and a team high of 13 rebounds. Later in the week the frosh (14-4) continued to roll at the expense of Bucknell, 74-67, while the varsity bowed to the revenge- minded Bisons, 102-73. Lehigh upset Bucknell in overtime at Grace Hall earlier in the campaign. It was the eighth straight triumph for the freshmen. In the Lafayette varsity encounter the Brown and White took charge early and coasted almost the entire route. Coach Roy Heckman's aggressive squad gave away size but still managed to out-rebound the Leopards although Frank Babic, the No. 2 board man behind Fortune, left midway through the first half with an ankle injury, Lehigh cut loose with a 19-3 outburst, largely on the efforts of Fortune, Johnny Waters, Ken Etra and Scott Beeten, to smother the Leopards under a 34-14 score with 3:15 remaining in the half. It was 36-18 at the intermission. Lafayette, completely upset by Lehigh's hustling man-to-man defense, ball-hawking and a sticky full-court press, could make only four field goals over the first 20 minutes. The Leopards showed signs of a comeback at the start of the second half, slicing their deficit to 13 at 38-25, but Fortune stemmed the tide with a pusher and two free throws and Waters added a three-point maneuver. It was 49-30 after Ted Bayer and Bob Bonow each sank a pair of free throws and the Engineers once again were rolling along with little difficulty. Lehigh's lead returned to 20 points at 77-57 and, after two Leopard foul conversions, the Engineers finished strong with a pair of rapid-fire baskets by Art Schiel and Beeten. Action was heated at times and 52 personal fouls were called.
