Gridders Romp In Qp#t%f, 59-21 X-Country Team Debuts September28 John Covert, in his second season as coach of Lehigh University's cross-country squad, hopes for the Engineers' best record since 1957. He has some highly-talented runners practicing, topped by holders of University varsity and and freshman distance records. The Engineers face a pair of formidable foes in their opening test Sept. 28, going against Temple and Pennsylvania on the Owls' course in Philadelphia. Co-captain Steve Haas, a letterman from Massillon, O., boasts the varsity five-mile standard of 26:02. Bob Detrick of Bethel Park, Pa., unbeaten last year in frosh competition, set the freshman three-mile record of 14:31.3. Other lettermen on the squad are co-captain Bill Succop of Renfrew, Pa., Ed Carney of White Plains, N.Y., Tim Kleiner of Dunellen, N.J., and Tom Wise of Wallingford, Pa. In 1957, coached by John Steckbeck, the Lehigh harriers were 7-0-0. Last year, as Covert made his debut, they were 8-3-0 for the University's first winning cross-country campaign in 10 years. " We have some excellent first-line runners," says Covert. "Our main task is building up strength behind them in case of an emergency." The schedule: Sept. 28--Temple and Pennsylvania at Temple; Oct. 4—Muhlenberg, home; 11—Rutgers, home; 16—West Chester, away; 19—Albright, away; 23~Rider, home; 26—Canisius Invitati onal at Buffalo; 30—Gettysburg and Elizabeth, home; Nov. 2—Dickinson and Haver- ford at Dickinson; 5—Columbia, away; 14--Lafayette, away; 17— IC4A Tournament at New York; 22—MAC Tournament at Philadelphia. Co-Captains Attackman Tim Turner of Fairfield, Conn., and midfielder Tom Zink of Baltimore, Md., have been elected co-captains of Lehigh University's 1969 varsity lacrosse squad. The announcement was made by Jim Scible, former University of Maryland stickman who coached the Engineers to a 6- and-6 mark last season. Turner, and defenseman Steve Kelban of Oceanside, N.Y., represent Lehigh on the 1968 all- star team as selected by Middle Atlantic Conference mentors. Zink, and midfielder Dave Bramble of Chestertown, Md., were named to the second team. If you have not received your application and want one, write to William T. Christian, Ticket Manager, Athletic Department, Lehigh University. The deadline for applications is Friday, October 25. The game will be played at Easton on November 23. Twenty-one points in the first quarter catapulted Lehigh's football forces to a 59-21 rout of Drexel last Saturday as the Engineers made their 1968 debut in Taylor Stadium before 8,500 sun-drenched spectators. It was the team's highest total since 1959 when a 63-0 victory was achieved over a visiting Tufts aggregation. Coach Fred Dunlap's squad took charge immediately, ran up 28-0 and 38-7 leads, and never let the Dragons entertain any ideas about repeating an upset triumph they registered on the same field two years ago. Three of Lehigh's highly- touted sophomore runners, Justin Plummer, Jim Petrillo and Jack Paget, were ring-leaders in the walkaway. Coach's Comment "Generally we put forth a pretty solid effort although some of our men made mistakes which we'll work on during the week. We saw signs of a sustained ground attack. We're working hard on this phase of the game and it looks like we're getting some results." Fred Dunlap, head football coach. Season Football Statistics TEAM LEH. OPP. First downs 27 15 Net Yds.
