He also is planning to issue a monthly newsletter and alumni may request this in the same note. Diorio, former Pius X star, tallied on an 80-yard punt return and a 19-yard end sweep. Rizzo scored on an 88-yard kickoff return and a 10-yard end run. It was a day of long-gainers. Curtis Barefoot raced 95 yards with a kickoff for Bucknell's first score after the Little Engineers had tallied twice, and Lehigh quarterback Ron Wilsker of Averene, N. Y., chipped in with a pair of long touchdown passes. 100th X-Country Win A record-breaking effort by junior Ed Carney, of White Plains, N.Y., paced Lehigh's cross country team to an impressive 19-38 rout ofvisiting Delaware on the Saucon Valley Fields. He covered the new 5-mile course in 25:43. It was the 100th coaching victory for John Covert, his 11th in 15 starts as head of the Engineer squad. The balance of his triumphs were registered while coaching at Ossining, N. Y.,High School. Bob Detrick of Bethel Park, Pa., and Steve Haas, of Massillon, O., finished second and third respectively, against the Blue Hens. Delaware was one of three teams to defeat Lehigh last season. Rutgers invaded the Saucon Valley Fields three days later and won over the Engineers in a close battle, 25-30, handing the Lehigh harriers their second loss in five decisions. Tom Bazley covered the route in 25:31 to place first. Carney topped Lehigh, finishing third. Lehigh's highly-touted freshman squad won over both rivals, taking Delaware 21-35 and Rutgers 24-33. Some 9,300 spectators in Taylor Stadium watched the Engineers bounce back repeatedly in a wild struggle which found the surprised Rutgers squad killing the clock during the last minute near midfield. The last time Lehigh scored four touchdowns against the Scarlet in one game was 12 years ago (1956) and the Engineers won that one, 27-13. Sophomore tailback Jack Paget, of Fairfield, Conn., enjoyed the finest scoring day a Lehigh man has experienced since 1960 when he made all four of the Engineer touchdowns on short running plays while picking up 97 yards in 22 carries. Paget tied the all-time Lehigh point record for one game (24) set by Dick Gabriel against Carnegie Tech in 1949. Dick Doyne equalled that against the same opponent in 1950 and Pat Clark touched Colgate for a similar number in 1960. Both teams were missing offensive stars. Halfback Bryant Mitchell of Rutgers sat out the game with bruised ribs. Split end Jerry Berger of Lehigh saw action only on a couple of plays because of a pulled leg muscle. Each squad came up with an outstanding replacement at the respective position. Paul Hohne subbed for Mitchell and gained 126 yards in 27 carries, scoring twice. Paul Harrington, a wing- back, took Berger's spot and caught five passes for 47 yards. Rutgers took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter as Bruce Van Ness fired a 5-yard scoringpass to tight end Bob Stonebraker ending a 46-yard drive. Early in the second period Pete Savino of the Scarlet intercepted a Jim Baxter pass and ran 28 yards to the Lehigh two. Hohne rammed (Continued on Page 2) Coach's Comment "That performance against Rutgers justifies the faith we, as coaches, have in this squad. The men outplayed Rutgers and deserved to win. We had some extraordinary efforts out there." . . .Fred Dunlap, varsity football. 8108T •Vr3 'K3H31H139 •3AV H!8 6*£ HONlVti -3 views'-
