LEHIGHNOW May 28, 2003 Volume 3, Issue 16 IN BRIEF HONORS/AWARDS Accounting research journal earns top award Accounting Horizons, a quarterly research journal edited for the past three years by Jim Largay, professor of accounting, received the Emerald Management Review's (EMR) 2003 Golden Page Award for "Readability of Research" in the Accounting and Finance journal category. Based in the UK, Emerald publishes 150 journals. In addition, each year it evaluates articles in the top 400 management periodicals in the world in six research and readability areas. Specialist reviewers examine more than 18,000 articles each year and EMR recognizes the highest-ranked journal in each functional management category with Golden Page Awards. "This type of independent, unsolicited recognition of our work at Accounting Horizons, and the untold hours I spend as editor with green pen in hand, comprehensively editing all published articles, is highly gratifying," Largay says. Largay attended the April 24 awards ceremony in London to receive the award. Russert exhorts Class of 2003 to help others As the Lehigh graduates of 2003 marched into Goodman Stadium on May 18, they glowed, partly from the bright sun of a perfect spring morning, but more so because of their passage into what Gregory Farrington, Lehigh president, termed "life, as in 'real.'" A total of 1,185 students earned degrees as members of the Class of '03—902 bachelor's degrees, 239 master's degrees, and 44 doctoral degrees. Of the graduating students, 403 hailed from the local area, and 24 were from countries outside the U.S., from the Bahamas to Germany to Tim Russert, host of Meet the Press and senior vice president of NBC News addresses the Class of 2003. The commencement ceremony presented students, faculty, and parents with messages about family values, lifelong learning, and a few humorous anecdotes from keynote speaker Tim Russert, host of Meet the Press and senior vice president of NBC News. To open the ceremony, Farrington urged the graduates to "be good sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, and important members of your civic community." The award winners were: Henri J. Barkey, professor of international relations and head of that department, who received the 2003 Eleanor and Joseph F. Libsch Research Award; Elizabeth Dolan, assistant professor of English, who received the 2003 Lehigh Junior Award for Distinguished Teaching; Jennifer L. Gagliardi, a teaching assistant in the biological services department, who received the 2002-03 Lehigh University Teaching Assistant Award; Heather B. Johnson, assistant professor of sociology, who received the 2003 Alfred Noble Robinson Award; Michael R. Kuchka, associate professor of biological sciences, who received the 2003 Stabler Award for Excellence in Teaching; Rajan Menon, the Monroe J. Rathbone Professor of International Relations, who received the 2003 Eleanor and Joseph F. Libsch Research Award; Keith J. Schray, professor of chemistry, who received the 2003 Hillman Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising; Roger D. Simon, professor of history, who received the 2003 Christian and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching; K. Sivakumar, associate professor of management and marketing, who received the 2003 Carl R. and Ingeborg Beidleman Research Award; Jean R. Soderlund, professor of history, chair of that department, and co-director of the Lawrence Henry Gipson Institute for Eighteenth- Century Studies at Lehigh, who received the 2003 Hillman Faculty Award; and Harvey G.
