The Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcaster's Association granted the award in the category of public affairs. The students will receive the award at a ceremony on June 8 in Harrisburg. Jim DeSouza, news director for WDIY, worked with Wurth and the students for the series of radio spots that dealt with land-use issues in the state ofPennsylvania. The students are: former undergraduates Charlotte Lomax '01 and Christine Metz '00, graduate students Francesca Paterek and Kristy Weidner, and teaching assistant Ellie Smith. "Naturally, we were elated when we heard that the students' work had received this award," said Wurth, professor of political science at Lehigh. "In effect, instead of producing a conventional course's research report or term paper, the students produced news features to air on local public radio. We're happy to see their considerable efforts have been recognized." The relationship between Lehigh and WDIY-FM was initiated in the spring of 2000 as a collaborative project between the political science department and the station in an experimental class and community outreach experiment, with the help of Lehigh's former Ventures program. The concept was developed by a committee that included Hannah Stewart-Gambino, then director of graduate studies, now associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; then-department chair Frank Davis; and former WDIY News Director Dina Weinstein. In replacing Weinstein at WDIY, DeSouza further encouraged and developed the project with the Spring 2001 group, which was the first set of students nominated for the AP award, Wurth said. "Only one of the students I worked with had any previous journalism experience," recalls DeSouza. "Yet to a person, they delved into all sides of these issues and produced well-rounded stories. It was a pleasure to work with them." The feature spots produced as part of this course covered land use issues, with a focus on Lehigh Valley applications. Topics addressed were historic districts, funding of open-space preservation, multi-munincipality cooperative land use planning, and the proposed expansion of Route 22. This semester's group of seven students has already produced seven new features that have aired on WDIY, and several more are in production.
