Undergrad research and opportunity An Alternative spring break South Mountaineer Lehigh sinks Navy on the mats 0 Alumni gift supports construction of new residence hall complex on the Hill by Jennifer Montemurro A generous gift from Jane and Dick Brown '52, of Carlsbad, Calif., will leave a lasting impact on both the physical and social environment of Lehigh. Their gift will help finance the construction of a new residence hall complex on the Hill to the north of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. Known as the Brown Family Village, the complex will occupy about six acres and will consist of three 50- bed apartment buildings and a separate recreational building called the Brown Family Center. Although most of the apartments will have four single bedrooms, there will be some three- person units, as well as a few one-person efficiency apartments. Dick Brown, who lives outside of San Diego with his wife Jane, graduated with a B.A. in economics. He was president of the Harold Brooks Corp., a fashion costume jewelry wholesaler, prior to his retirement in 1986. He and his wife are active supporters of the U.S. Equestrian Team. Dick Brown is a trustee of the United States Equestrian Team, assistant treasurer of the Team, and chair of the Finance Committee of the Team. He is also a member of the Silver Stirrup Society of the University of California at Davis. "We wished to perpetuate the family's name and we wished to create a lasting, tangible and meaningful memorial," Jane Brown said. "We were told that Lehigh had insufficient on-campus housing to meet the students' needs. Dick had lived in a fraternity while at Lehigh, and we preferred the design The Brown Family Center Mountain Drive of small structures rather than a dormatory." According to Anthony Corallo, assistant vice president for facilities service and campus planning, all bedrooms in the new apartments will be single occupancy and each apartment will have a common kitchen, dining room and bathroom. Each building will have a common family room with a fireplace and laundry facili ties, he said. The recreational building will house a family room with a television and fire place, pool tables and a convenience store. The complex will also accommodate about 100 cars, Corallo said.
