The budget is virtually balanced, but a few trade-offs are still being discussed. Eleven groups provided written comments about the ' original budget to the Planning and Budgeting (P&B) Working Group. In addition to each college and vice presidential area, feedback was also received from the Faculty Financial Planning and Operations Committee (FFPOC), the Employee Relations Advisory Committee (ERAC), and the Faculty Steering Committee (FSC). According to Jim Tiefenbrunn, assistant vice president for resource management, the responses contained some very clear messages. "Faculty and staff salaries were of greatest concern, followed closely by the operating budgets for academic departments," he said. "There were also several comments about our ancillary operations, and the need to look closely at the benefits and costs of those programs." "The committee really appreciated the time and effort that these groups put into developing their feedback," said Interim President William C. Hittinger. "The process has gone better this year than last. We are making considerable progress in eliminating the problem of unfunded previous commitments which have occurred at the start of most recent budgets. The pressure this year was to make more careful decisions about where we are investing our dollars, and to look closely at supporting academic initiatives.'"
