Markley, new provost and vice president for academic affairs, stressed the need for academic excellence at Lehigh's annual Founder's Day celebration Oct. 9 in Packer Memorial Chapel. "I believe an emphasis on excellence broadly conceived should be Lehigh's hallmark in the coming decade," Markley said. "I have chosen not to define excellence, " he continued. "From my standpoint, it is a community value." Markley said an emphasis on excellence must be "broadly pursued by the entire university community. Our contributions to the greater Bethlehem community must also be excellent." He said Lehigh can be a leader in linking research to teaching. As research enriches Lehigh's curricula, he noted, it will increase the potential for exciting undergraduate research experiences. According to Markley, Lehigh must continue to attract and appoint the best new Ph.D.s in the country, who in turn, will attract high school students looking at colleges. "Recruitment, orientation and retention of outstanding undergraduates are areas on which we should focus our excellence," he said. "For the high school graduates, their futures are at stake as they select a college, learn to live on the campus and study in their freshman courses," said Markley. "In the process they are putting enormous trust in all of us." Candidates for the election must register by Oct. 29. Voting is scheduled for Nov. 9-24, and prizes will be awarded at 7 p.m., Nov. 24, in Neville II Auditorium. Edwin Burnard, who has a B.S. and an M.S. from Lehigh and is the younger brother of Warren, will speak at the awards ceremony. Edwin works for a pharmaceutical firm in Norristown, Pa. The first Good Scholar Election was sponsored by Tau Epsilon Phi, a fraternity that has since left campus. The fraternity brothers came up with the idea of a cancer-research fundraiser after their adviser, Alvin Cohen, professor of economics, was stricken with cancer. Cohen recovered and now advises Zeta Psi. Last year, Zeta Psi raised $21,000 for the American Cancer Society after 64 candidates were registered for the election.
