After a leave of absence, she will return to the university as dean emerita and a faculty member in the philosophy department, where she has tenure. "With regret, I'm stepping down from-the deanship because my recent review has persuaded me that I ought to make way for new leadership in the college," said Straumanis. "I leave office sadly, but with sincere appreciation and affection for my friends and colleagues at Lehigh. I look back proudly on the good things we have accomplished together." "Joan has earned the respect and admiration of the Lehigh community, and we value her contributions as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences," said Pres. Peter Likins. "Joan will remain a valuable player on the Lehigh team in her new role as dean emerita and professor of philosophy . She will continue to serve as the point person on some of the exciting projects that she has initiated." "As dean, Joan has been very supportive of the arts, interdisciplinary students and the multicultural dimensions of the university," said Interim Provost Patti Ota. "Everyone appreciates Joan's efforts to promote the college and advance the arts at Lehigh. She will return to her roots as a faculty member and continue her work for Lehigh." Likins and Ota met with the college faculty May 6 to begin the consultative process to select the next dean. The hope is to identify a current faculty member who will become dean in July and serve for at least the next three years. The goal is to announce the new dean by June 1. Straumanis came to Lehigh as dean in 1995 from the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), where she was a program officer. Prior to joining the Department of Education, she was dean of the faculty of arts and sciences at Rollins College, associate provost at Kenyon College and a faculty member at Denison University. — Rita Malone Lehigh University Campus Weekly May 7,1997 Joe Marcus Lt. Gov. Mark Schweiker and about 800 Lehigh Valley students spent some time at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming as part of JASON Project VIII, hosted by the SMART Discovery Center. The JASON Project can be seen at the center through May 9. Princeton theologian Peter J. Paris to give baccalaureate address May 31 Peter J. Paris, the Elmer G. Homrighausen Professor of Christian Social Ethics at Princeton Theological Seminary, will ' deliver the baccalaureate address at the university's 129th Commencement. The ecumenical baccalaureate service, open to the public at no charge, will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 31, in Packer Memorial Church. Paris will receive an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree at Commencement, which is being held at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 1, in Goodman Stadium. A native of Nova Scotia, Canada, Paris has lectured in North America and Africa and Paris written on the spiritual struggles of Africans and African-Americans, the role of the Christian church in race relations and other topics. He is the author of five books, including The Spirituality of African Peoples: The Search for a Common Moral Discourse, Black Religious Leaders: Conflict in Unity, and The Social Teaching of the Black Churches. His essays discuss liberation theologies, feminism, social justice, Christian ethics and theological education. "Peter Paris is one of the significant Christian social ethicists of our time," said Lloyd H. Steffen, Lehigh chaplain and associate professor of religion studies. "He is an authoritative interpreter of the American black church experience and a leader in the African-American church effort to integrate spirituality into the quest for wholeness and liberation. As a theologian, he affirms a God who wills that people be free from oppression. This message should be important to all of us." Paris earned his B.A. and B.D. from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He taught at the divinity schools of Howard and Vanderbilt universities before joining Princeton. He has received honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees from Acadia University and McGill University of Montreal. He was named Alumnus of the Year by the University of Chicago Divinity School in 1995, and was elected president of the American Academy of Religion that same year.
