Schmotter, dean of the College of Business and Economics, has accepted the position of dean of the Haworth College of Business at Western Michigan University, effective July 1. Schmotter Schmotter joined Lehigh in 1992, after serving as associate dean of the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. "It's hard to leave the Lehigh environment," said Schmotter. "There are few places in American higher education where undergraduate education is taken more seriously and there's probably no place with more loyal or enthusiastic students and alumni. I think that both Lehigh and the College of Business and Economics are well positioned to continue to grow in reputation and quality, and I know they will. Western Michigan simply presented me with a set of professional opportunities that I couldn't turn down." Peter Likins, Lehigh president, said, "Jim and his gracious wife, Daphne, have been important members of the Lehigh community, not only through Jim's service as dean but in the larger affairs of the university. They made their Lehigh Valley home as residents of Taylor College for a time, while Jim served as faculty master of that residence hall, so many, Lehigh students know them both in personal ways." Patti Ota, interim provost, said, "I have enjoyed working with Jim over the past five years, and wish him the very best in the next stage of his career." Likins and Ota held a meeting of the college faculty and staff Monday in Perella Auditorium. A congratulatory send-off will be planned in which all of Schmotter's colleagues will have the opportunity to thank him for his service to Lehigh. Kean, former governor of New Jersey and current president of Drew University, will give the commencement speech at Lehigh's spring graduation exercises on Sunday, June 1. "I have been eager to engage Tom Kean as our commencement speaker since he was governor of New Jersey, and I'm elated that the senior class officers have decided to Kean invite him this year, when his son Reed is graduating," said Peter Likins, university president. "He is an exceptional man, both as a public figure and as a private citizen, and I will be very proud to introduce him." Senior class officers work with Likins to select the spring commencement speaker. "Tom Kean has demonstrated his" commitment to the community through his very successful role as the former governor of New Jersey and his commitment to education through his current role as president of Drew University," said John J. Franchini, president of the senior class. "In view of Lehigh's strong tradition of alumni support and family atmosphere, it is an honor to once again have a parent of a graduate deliver the keynote address." Franchini, a native of Williamstown, N.J.. will receive a bachelor's degree in political science at commencement. Kean's son, Reed Kean, will receive a bachelor's degree in marketing at the June graduation.
