The Class of 2000, with 1,100 students from 38 states and 21 foreign countries, arrived Aug. 23 to check in and begin four days of orientation. More than 100 faculty and staff members helped freshmen move into their rooms along with fraternity, sorority and upperclass student volunteers. Classes began for all students today (Aug. 27). The freshman class is 37.5 percent women and 13.6 percent minority students. Almost half of the class (46 percent) will enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences. About two-thirds (65 percent) are from Lehigh's traditional strong areas of Pa., N.Y., and N.J. Inquiries for the freshmen class were up 74 percent since 1990, and applications for the freshman class have risen 38 percent during that time. Highlights ofthe weekend's activities included the annual Freshman-Alumni rally on Sunday night (Aug. 25) when the Class of 1950 "adopted" the incoming Class of 2000. The fun-filled pep rally in lower Grace Hall included the Marching '97 band, cheerleaders, and Mountain Hawk mascot. Presenting the class flag was Lee Barthold of Bethlehem, president of the Class of 1950. Accepting the flag for the Class of 2000 were Emily Ruth Brogowski (of Paramus, N.J.), and Michael Zoltan Johnson (of Washington, Pa.) Both are the eighth person in their respective families to attend Lehigh. Photos by Young Hong All the comforts of home... Sara Pickens '00, with her ten-year-old brother Zachary, survey her new digs in Dravo House. "I loved the school after I took my first tour and saw the campus," said Sara. "I'm looking forward to meeting new people and a good academic year." r~.v L. Wr Rhonda Gross (right) and Janice Stoudt (center) of the finance office give Justin Hughes his room assignment in Centennial II. Orientation ended with the Freshman Convocation last night (Aug. 26) in Packer Chapel. During the ceremony, the Class of 2000 was formally inducted into the Lehigh family. About 240 of the freshmen arrived at Lehigh early to participate in the optional outdoor adventure program Aug. 20-22. The students chose one of four options: backpacking along the Appalachian Trail, canoeing along the Delaware River, rock climbing in Ralph Stover State Park, or caving in Carnegie Cave. The program helps the students get to know 19 other classmates very well before orientation starts, and prepares them mentally for the challenges they will face in college, such as making decisions and working together in groups.
