LehighWeek with South Mountaineer Volume 10, Issue 5 Lehigh University Campus Weekly Inside News Events People Athletics 1-3 4-5,6 7-8 October 1,1996 College of Education to hold Alumni Day The College of Education will sponsor the 19th annual Alumni Day on Sat., Oct. 5. The program will begin with registration and coffee at 8:30 a.m. in the Wood Dining Room, lacocca Hall. The keynote address will be given by James P. Comer, professor of child psychiatry and center Comer director of school development program at Yale Child Study Center and associate dean of Yale University School of Medicine. Comer is best known for his School Development Program, also known as the Comer Process. Comer describes the process, implemented in more than 600 middle and high schools, in his book, School Power. Comer has written many other books, including such major works as Beyond Black and White and Maggie's American Dream, which deal with the issues of black and white racial conflict in America and the rearing of black children, respectively. Comer has been a recipient of many honors, including the Rockefeller Public Service Award and the Special Presidential Commendation Award. He has received 32 honorary degrees and is also the author of more than 30 book chapters and some 400 articles. He is a contributing editor to Parents Magazine and has provided consultation services to such organizations as Children's Television Workshop (Sesame Street, Electric Company). The award session will begin at 9 a.m., at which time three local teachers will be honored with the Outstanding Teacher Award. Upperclass Parents Weekend showcased students, their activities and the campus as upperclass parents spent time with their children meeting professors, touring buildings and looking at projects. Before the Dartmouth football game, faculty, staff, friends and alumni were treated to events, which included pennant making, face painting and clowns at the five Family Day tents on the Goodman campus.
