More than $12,000. was raised during the dinner and auction. Provost Al Pense '59G was master of ceremonies and put his well-known sense of humor to work on each of the "roasters." They included Don Bott '54, executive director of the alumni association; Joe Daddona '60, former Mayor of Allentown; U.S. Representative Paul McHale '72; Patti Ota, vice provost and associate to the president; Ken Smith '61, mayor of Bethlehem; Father Daniel G. Gambit, OSFS, '86H, president of Allentown College; and former state senator Jeanette Reibman '86H. Led by auctioneer Wil Hahn, professor emeritus from East Stroudsburg University, the live auction included a day with Likins in Washington, D.C, attending a meeting of the Agile Forum. Many "roasters" chose Likins' relatively short stature to satirize during their talks: McHale said "The job of university president really wears you down. Some of you may remember that Peter Likins was over six feet tall when he was hired." Gambet gave Likins a toast: "To the king of the Provost Alan Pense and President Peter Likins enjoy one of Rep. Paul McHale's jokes during a recent "roast" of Likins to benefit the Center City Ministries, photo by Jennifer Rauch Mountaintop, America's shortest giant." "I'm a little tired of the short jokes," Likins said in rebuttal. "Ever since I got here, Al Pense has been talking over my head." He pulled out of his "rebuttal bag" a periscope-like contraption made from tin cans; he and Pense, who is over six feet, then demonstrated how it helps them better communicate. Turanchik named director of alumni association Barb Turanchik '75, associate director of the alumni association, has been promoted to executive director. Her appointment was announced by Donald H. Bott '54, executive director of the association, and is effective July 1. Turanchik will succeed Bott, who will be retiring after 12 years at the university. For Turanchik, who earned a B.A. from Lehigh in 1975 and is a member ofthe university's first coed class, being chosen as the Barb Turanchik first female executive director is especially gratifying. "I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to attend an outstanding university like Lehigh and am grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve as the executive director of its alumni association," said Turanchik. "I was also lucky to have two outstanding mentors, Jim Niemeyer, director emeritus, and Don Bott. I appreciate Don's vision and guidance and will strive to maintain the excellence he has attained. With the help of our experienced and knowledgeable association staff, and the support of our wonderful alumni, we will continue to build for the future." Turanchik joined the Lehigh staff in 1980 as assistant executive director of the alumni association. She was promoted to associate director in 1986. "We're very pleased and excited in starting a new chapter in the alumni association's history with Barb as our executive director. She has earned her spurs, is well-respected by our colleagues in the alumni relations profession, and has strong support from our Lehigh alumni," said Bott. "On a personal note, lam proud as can be of her selection and know that she'll do an excellent job." During her tenure with the association, Turanchik has been responsible for the supervision and management of 68 alumni clubs nationwide, and various other activities such as involving alumni with the recruitment of prospective students. As an undergraduate, she was named to the dean's list, served on the class gift and senior class committees, was a member ofthe University Glee Club, and played powder-puff football. Turanchik, a native and resident of Bethlehem, is also active with civic organizations. She is on the nominating committee for the Great Valley Girl Scout Council and a member of the Young Professional Association of the Lehigh Valley.
