February 15,1995 Good-bye John! John Woltjen, vice president for finance and administration, was honored for his 17 years of service to Lehigh and Bethlehem at a reception Feb. 7. He was presented with a Lehigh chair to take along in his retirement in New Hampshire and North Carolina. Bethlehem Mayor Ken Smith praised John's contributions to the community, particularly his work with the Chamber of Commerce, Bethlehem Economic Development Corp., and Lehigh Valley Industrial Park. In honor of his long-term commitment to the quality of life in the city, Mayor Smith proclaimed Feb. 7 John Woltjen Day in Bethlehem. "The quality of life in a city can be attributed to v citizens who invest their time and talents," said Smith. "John is a civic leader of significant influence who has demonstrated a commitment to strengthen relations between Lehigh and the city. His leadership work with the BEDCO loan pool was a major factor in accomplishing the Comfort Inn project, Sayre Inn renovations, and the Bethlehem Technology Center, all on the South Side." Several letters from trustees praising John's hard work over the years and love of Lehigh were read at the gathering. "He will be a tough act to follow," said Bill Hittinger, chairman ofthe trustees, but "we hope John and his wife Barbara will enjoy retirement to the maximum." Pres. Peter Likins thanked Woltjen for his hard work and support over the years, noting that Woltjen, who started under the previous president Deming Lewis, had to accept and adjust to a different management style under Likins. "John grew and embraced the challenge of change," said Likins. "John deliberately altered his management style to adapt to changing times. Lehigh must have balanced budgets and it is a gut-wrenching challenge in a university that always runs close to the edge." In response Woltjen said his most cherished memories of Lehigh are of the people with whom he worked. A Moravian graduate, he recounted his feelings upon arriving back in Bethlehem in 1977 to take the Lehigh position. "I felt I had reached employment heaven. I had a lot of opportunities to take other jobs, but I didn't want to leave Lehigh, and I didn't want to leave the people Pres. Peter Likins thanks Woltjen years and gives him a hug good- with a Lehigh chair, photos by Joe here." His final comment was advice to his successor, Rhonda Gross. "I leave a good organization for you," for his hard work over the bye before presenting him Ryan he said. "But please make some changes because that's what life is all about. Keep the people and Lehigh marching forward." Bethlehem Mayor Ken Smith (right) presents the proclamation to John Woltjen declaring Feb. 7 "John Woltjen Day." Rhonda I. Gross, (third from left) Lehigh's new vice president for finance and administration, was welcomed to Lehigh at a recent party for women staff and faculty at the home of Vice Provost Patti Ota.
