An autumn flowering cherry tree — pink ribbons attached to its branches — was dedicated beneath a clear blue sky to the memory of Jennifer Grider, 17 and Mary Orlando, 15. A memorial mass in Packer Chapel followed. "Lehigh is a part of this community, and the community has suffered an enormous tragedy*" said President Peter Likins, who gave a momento to each of the Grider and Orlando families during the mass. "It was important to make a statement that we share in the grief. It was important that we do it when The Rev. Alfred Schlert, Catholic chaplain and director of Lehigh's Newman Center, blessed the newly planted cherry tree during a dedication service on Lower Sayer Park Road. Photo by John Kish iv our students had returned, and it was important to me that the Lehigh choir was able to participate," Likins said. Also participating in the mass was Bethlehem Mayor Ken Smith '61; Lehigh Chaplain Lloyd Steffen; Rev. Alfred Schlert, Catholic chaplain and director of the Newman Center; and Monsignor Michael Chaback of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, Bethlehem. "We extend the sympathies of this university to the families of Jennifer and Mary," Steffen told about 150 people who attended the mass. "We join in their hope that justice will be served in the days ahead." "This is a truly beautiful site, forever scarred by death. This tree is a remembrance that good triumphs over evil," said Rev. Schlert . LEHIGH LehighWeek Office Linderman Library 30 Library Drive Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18015-3067 MARIE C.
