Provost Al Pense ehigh's Board of Trustees approved construction ofthe first phase ofthe Zoellner Arts Center at their board, meeting June 1. This phase is the four- level, 350-car parking garage on the corner of Packer Ave. and Fillmore St. "I am pleased we have received approval to move ahead on the first phase of this important project," said Pres. Peter Likins. "The $5 million grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was the critical factor in convincing the board to move ahead at this time. We have now raised $24 million for the Zoellner Arts Center and are working hard to raise the remaining funds necessary as quickly as possible." If contributions to the arts center continue to be made on the projected schedule for fund-raising, and the trustees approve the second phase of construction in early 1995, the Zoellner Arts Center will be available for use in early 1997. Construction of the parking facility will begin sometime in August and require the closing ofthe Rauch Business Center parking lot for the fall -ter. Chris Christian, director of transportation services, and Pat Kovacs, manager of parking services, are working to develop plans to reduce the expected parking difficulties. They are investigating several parking options, including leasing lots from the Bethlehem Parking Authority. Christian also reminded the campus community that the Brodhead and Packer Aves. lot was expanded in Dec. 1992 and is not yet fully utilized. The 95,000-square foot Zoellner Arts Center will include an art gallery on two levels, a 1,000-seat music auditorium, a 300-seat drama theatre, a black-box theatre, classrooms, rehearsal rooms and offices. It will house the departments of music and theatre and the Lehigh Art Galleries. It will showcase student performances, concerts and productions by visiting artists, and performances by community groups. Due to inflation, construction estimates have risen for the Zoellner Arts Center project. Total costs, including a $6 million operating andowment, are now estimated at $33 million, with $24 million already raised. Interim Arts and Sciences Dean Named W. BEALL FOWLER W. Beall Fowler, professor of physics, has been named interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences effective July 1. Fowler replaces James D. Gunton who resigned to become provost of Kenyon College in Ohio. Fowler joined Lehigh in 1966 as an associate professor, was promoted to professor in 1969 and was chair ofthe department 1978-84 and 1989-91. A specialist in theoretical solid-state physics, he was a sabbatical visitor at Oxford University in England and the University of Parma in Italy during 1985-6. Provost Al Pense said he chose Fowler for the position after consulting with the 18 department chairs in the college. A search committee for the position of dean will be formed shortly, he said, "The College of Arts and Sciences is a tremendously exciting place to be right now, and that's due in large part to Jim Gunton's inspiration and energy," Fowler said. "He infused the college with a sense of vitality and catalyzed the development and enhancement of a number of important programs. "We've got an outstanding faculty, great students, and a rich program of study that allows for diverse opportunities. I think there is a potential for many more good things to continue and I welcome the opportunity to help those things happen," he said. Fowler earned his B.S. from Lehigh in engineering physics in 1959. In 1963, he was granted a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Rochester. He won the R.R. and E.C. Hillman Award in 1990 for advancing the interests ofthe university, and the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences Service Teaching Award in 1986.
