Scott by Brian Merritt '98 William R. Scott, director of the African American Studies Program and professor of history, will give the Commencement speech at the mid-year graduation on January 15, 1995. It will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Stabler Athletic and Convocation Center. The topic of the talk, says Scott, will be "the part to be played by the graduates in the fulfillment of Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream for America — why the realization of his great dream remains a relevant social goal and why they should be firmly committed to its fulfillment." Scott joined Lehigh's faculty in 1992, and specializes in African-American and African studies. He is also a member of the national council of the Institute for International Education's South African Education Program, and is the author of Son's ofSheba's Race: African Americans and the Italo-Ethiopian War which is about Italy's 1935 invasion of Ethiopia. A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Scott earned a B.A. in history from Lincoln University, an M.A. in African history from Howard University, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in American history from Princeton University. Prior to coming to Lehigh, he served as dean ofthe School of Arts and Science at Clark Atlanta University, and associate dean at Wellesley College and Oberlin College. Lehigh goes to Japan Jiro Kondo, head of the Japanese delegation, was Dr. Likin's counterpart at the Business- University Forum of Japan. See page 3 for more coverage of Japan.
