More than 500 painter's caps were given away during the event, which also featured face painting, a clown show, cartoon portraits, musical entertainment and scavenger hunts. Action outside Goodman Stadium rivaled that inside on Family Day '94. Clarence the Clown demonstrates his artistry with balloons to colorful audience members, complete with painted faces and decorated painter's caps. Sponsored by Lehigh's alumni association, the special activities were held in tents outside of the stadium, prior to the Lehigh vs. Columbia football game, photos by Elizabeth Keegin Colley by Paul Klenck '98 Lehigh will confer undergraduate and advanced degrees upon nearly 240 students at the University's 116th annual Founder's Day Ceremonies on Sunday, October 9. The traditional ceremonies will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Packer Memorial Church. Niara Sudarkasa, president of Lincoln University, will give the principal address. She will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Two other honorary degrees will also be presented at the ceremony. Gregory O'Brien, chancellor of the University of New Orleans and a Lehigh alumnus, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Paul E. Torgersen, president of Virginia Founder's Day Ceremonies Gregory O'Brien Polytechnic Institute and State University and also a Lehigh alumnus, will receive an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree. O'Brien has served as chancellor of the Univ. of New Orleans since 1987. From 1980 until 1987, he served the Univ. of South Florida as vice president for academic affairs and professor of psychology, social work, management and public health. From 1978 to 1980, he was provost and professor of psychology at the Univ. of Michigan at Flint. O'Brien earned his Niara Sudarkasa Paul E. Torgersen bachelor's degree from Lehigh in social relations in 1966. He holds master's and doctoral degrees in psychology from Boston Univ. Torgersen assumed the presidency of Virginia Tech in 1994, where he also serves as the John W. Hancock Jr. Chair in Engineering. Prior to that, he served as president of the university's Corporate Research Center and as dean of the College of Engineering for 20 years. He also served as chairman ofthe Engineering Dean's Council, the national organization of engineering deans. He was elected - to the National Academy of Engineering in 1986. Torgersen earned a B.S. in industrial engineering from Lehigh in 1953. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. from Ohio State University. Sudarkasa was appointed president of Lincoln Univ. in 1987. She is the first woman to head Lincoln, formerly an all- male college chartered in 1854 as America's first Black college. Prior to Lincoln, she served as professor of anthropology at the Univ. of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She is recognised internationally for her pioneering research on Yoruba women traders of Nigeria, and African and African American families. Her numerous honors and awards include being named to the Peace Corps National Advisory Council by President Bush, and to the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars by President Clinton. Sudarkasa was a Ford Foundation Early Entrance Scholar at Fisk University and Oberlin College, where she graduated at the age of 18.
