The announcement was" made by Jim Schmotter, dean of the the College of Business and Economics, who noted that the reduction also applies to the M.S. program in management of technology. Schmotter said the price reduction, which was approved recently by the Board of Trustees, is a direct response to the demands of the marketplace. "Quite simply, we are Quite simply, we are listening to our customers, both individual and corporate. listening to our customers, both individual and corporate," he said. "This is a result. We feel it will enable more of the high-quality students we seek to enroll at Lehigh." Schmotter said the decrease in price does not imply a decrease in quality. "We are adjusting our price as part of a much broader process of strengthening MBA education at Lehigh. We are engaged in a comprehensive effort to examine and improve all facets of the program. We understand fully that even as we lower our price, we must increase our quality. "This strategy was first followed by Japanese companies in such industries as autos, consumer electronics and semiconductors, and is now employed by all world-class companies. It is exciting to contemplate that Lehigh is among the first institutions in American higher education to take this approach, which has proven to be a responsible and competitive response to the realities of the environment and marketplace." Schmotter said that in the absence of continuing, serious curriculum development, a decrease in the MBA tuition price would simply constitute a discount. "But this adjustment is part of an ongoing reinvention of the MBA program and is a key step in increasing our competitiveness," he noted. A committee of five CBE faculty members is currently developing a new model for MBA education at Lehigh. This effort is informed by the work of the two study groups that last spring examined graduate education in the College. "While the committee is in the early stages of its work, with a spectrum of outcomes possible, we made the assumption that the regional market, served through part-time courses or via distance education, will remain a key constituency of the MBA program," Schmotter said.
