Joyce Brothers Addresses Class of '94 By WILLIAM JOHNSON, Writers' Group Citing lessons from colleagues, actors, Babe Ruth and Thomas Edison, Dr., Joyce Brothers exhorted Lehigh's graduating class not to let fear of failure keep them from trying. Addressing 1,150 graduates at Lehigh's 126th Commencement, Brothers said Edison was asked by a friend whether he was discouraged by the fact that he tried 50,000 different ways to make a storage battery. "The friend said, 'Too bad all your pains have produced no results.' Edison's response: 'No results? Why man, I have a lot of results. I know several thousand things that won't work.' "Actor Danny Glover, when asked about the most important thing he learned in his life, replied, 'Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.' "And Babe Ruth led major league baseball in home runs during his career, but he also led the league in strikeouts," she said. Before a crowd of 7,000 at Lehigh's Stabler Arena, the renowned psychologist spoke about how studies show boys and men often are motivated to leam by competition, while girls and women are driven by the inner satisfaction that comes from competence. Neither motivation is better, she said, and noted how both are used increasingly by both sexes. Brothers applauded the officers of Lehigh's Class of 1994— all women. Lori Owen of Danbury, Conn., senior class president, told the story of how she sat down on a park bench to write her graduation speech, and an elderly man sat down next to her. He told her there were only three things graduates must do: "Look up, look out and look in." Looking up, he said enables you to have a positive attitude that helps you through difficult times, looking out makes you aware of how what you do affects others and how you can make a difference in your community, and looking in helps you know who you are and what's important to you. Diplomas were presented in separate ceremonies by deans of each of Lehigh's four colleges. In all, 917 bachelor's, 191 master's and 42 doctoral degrees were awarded to students from 30 states, Puerto Rico and 23 foreign countries. Baccalaureate speaker was Dr. Joyce Brothers Phyllis Trible, Baldwin Professor of Sacred Literature, Union Theological Seminary, New York City. Receiving honorary degrees were Brothers (Humane Letters); Trible (Divinity); George M.C. Fisher, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Eastman Kodak Co. (Engineering); American composer Earl Kim, who is the James Edward Ditson Music Professor Emeritus at Harvard (Music); and Ardath Harter Rodale, chairman ofthe board and chief executive officer of Rodale Press, Inc., Emmaus, Pa.
