By KATHY RICHARDS Writers' Group The 15 students who studied in foreign countries last semester were welcomed home last week at a reception sponsored by the Office of International Education. The event also was an opportunity to meet several students from other countries spending spring semester at Lehigh. Anne H. Thomas, director of international students and scholars, said the reception, which is held each semester, is also a way to attract more students to consider study-abroad opportunities. "Everyone who's studied abroad has testified it's life changing," she said. Thomas said Lehigh currently has 47 students studying abroad, as well as 500 international students on campus from 67 nations'. "It's, wonderful to see this two-way street," she said. Her office also sponsors a "partnership" program in which American students are paired with foreign students during their stay at Lehigh. Among those attending the reception were five students from the University of Buckingham in England: Werner Beduhn, Fiona Campbell, Vikram Lokur, Clemens Toepfer and Andreas VonFilz. Students returning from study-abroad programs are Jennifer George, Maia Gomory, Cathryn Iannotta and Meredith Thorpe who attended the Institute of Italian Studies in Florence, Italy; Irene Dell Bene and Jeremy Weitz who attended the University of Buckingham; Justine Kaiser and Rebecca Lennon who attended a Drew University program in Brussels, and John McCumber, Bernadette Ryan and Brad Snyder who attended Butler University in Australia. Also returning were Yvonne Christinger who attended a Swarthmore College program in Grenoble, France; Dierdre O'Connor who attended at Stanford University program in Rome; Judith Morgan who studied in Athens, Greece; and Lisa Turek, who attended a New York University program in Madrid. Study Abroad Coordinator Karen R. Keim said the office is working on establishing liaisons with more universities as well as s everal internal programs. To raise money for an international student scholarship, the group also is selling Lehigh T-shirts with flags of all the countries in the world for $13. For information, call 758-3351.
