Galvin Tells Grads to 'Write the Rules' of Future Society By William Johnson Lehigh Writers' Group Robert Galvin, chairman of the executive committee of Motorola Inc., told the graduating class of Lehigh University Sunday (5/30) that "influencing the writing of society's rules is of first order importance always and particularly now. You can and should earn the credentials to be so influential." He told Lehigh's Class of 1993 that such rule-writing takes place on all tiers of society, and that whatever careers or endeavors they choose, there are rules to be written. "Prepare for that influence," Galvin said. "Enter into your community and join a civic organization. Join professional organizations. If you serve well, soon you'll be asked to be chairman of this or that. People will ask for your opinion. "Then, you'll be sought as a supportive, consultive person, and finally, you'll be looked to as the lead spokesperson. In this way, you'll be able to control your own destiny better than others." Galvin spoke at Lehigh's 125th commencement, where 900 students received undergraduate degrees, 194 master's degrees and 56 doctoral degrees. Pres. Peter Likins conferred an honorary doctoral degree upon Galvin; as well upon Robert Ballard, founder of the JASON Project and director of the Center for Marine Exploration at the Woods Hole (Mass.) Oceanographic Institute; Robert Cummings Neville, professor of religion and philosophy and dean of Boston University's School of Theology; Janet Stotland, managing attorney with the Pennsylvania Office of Education Law Center; and Clifton Wharton, Jr., U.S. Deputy Secretary of State. At the Baccalaureate Service held on Saturday evening (5/29) in Packer Memorial Church, speaker Robert Cummings Neville told graduates that the problem today is not a lack of faith, but bad public theology. Many people are now led by mistaken theology, as David Koresh and his followers in Waco, Texas showed. The resurgence of religious and ethnic conflicts particularly in Eastern Europe are really "religious wars. . . The problem is not a lack of faith, but bad theology." "The challenge is to tell true spirits from false," said Neville. "You are society's educated leaders" and have the responsibility to choose better alternatives. He urged those in attendance to choose spirits that lead to love, joy, peace, kindness and generosity; and to fight the evils of racism, sexism and prejudice. MARIE C.
