A week earlier, Lehigh ranked 4th in alumni satisfaction in U.S. News' 7th Annual "America's Best Colleges" survey. In that survey's overall rankings, Lehigh placed in the top 25 percent of 204 national universities, institutions which offer a wide range high priority on research and award large numbers of Ph.D.s. U.S. News' "Best Values" rankings combine the "Best Colleges" quality rankings with total cost and average financial aid grants to determine the top 50 Best Values. The schools are listed alphabetically but divided into 25 top and 25 runner-up Best Values. Lehigh placed in the latter group. Lehigh's annual alumni giving percentage— 46 per cent— was behind Dartmouth (54%), Duke (47%) and Notre Dame (46%). The ratings were based on the average percentage of a school's living undergraduate and graduate alumni who gave to its 1991 and 1992 fund drives. In the "Best Colleges" survey, Lehigh also ranked 21st in graduation rate, the average percentage of students in the 1983 to 1986 freshman classes who graduated in six years, and 15th in faculty resources, which includes student-faculty ratio and the percentage of faculty with doctorates or terminal degree in their field. The "Best Colleges" survey, conducted annually, rates 1,371 schools in five categories— national universities, national liberal arts colleges, regional colleges and universities, regional liberal arts colleges and specialized institutions. LU is the only Lehigh Valley institution in the national university category. Plus SOUTH MOUNTAINEER ' • »- % .
