Next Issue May 18 LEHIGHWEEK INSIDE Softball and Track Patriot League Championships See South Mountaineer MAY 4,1993 Pres. Peter Likins and Hans-Dietrich Genscher, former foreign minister of Germany, share a lighter moment prior to the seventh annual Cohen lecture held recently in Grace Hall. Genscher, who served as foreign minister from 1974 to 1992, gave a compelling and comprehensive address on "The New World Order." During his talk, he stressed the importance of European unity to the economic health of the United States and the importance of the European-American relationship. In addition, he stated that the current "European Revolution" will have even greater consequences than the Russian Revolution of 1917. The lecture series is sponsored by Lehigh alumnus Bernard L. Cohen, and his wife Berte Cohen, a Moravian College alumna. Festive bazaar featured international cultures A fashion show featuring clothing from around the world was held during the International Bazaar on April 25. At the bazaar, each international student group represented their country with special food, art, crafts and music. Eagleson, Jr. '49 William B. Eagleson, Jr. '49, of Malvern, Pa., chairman emeritus of Mellon Bank Corp., has been chosen to receive the annual "L-in-Life" alumni award from the Lehigh University Club of New York. The award will be presented at the club's annual dinner May 20 at the Plaza Hotel, New York. The award is given to alumni for outstanding achievements in business and professional life and for service to the university. A 1949 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the university, Eagleson has served on the Lehigh Board of Trustees since 1971. "Bill Eagleson's many years of thoughtful service and intellec- ual expertise have been much valued by the trustees and the niversity," said President Peter Likins. "Bill currently serves chair of the finance committee which has benefitted from his ood judgment and financial expertise, but his wisdom ranges far eyond finances." Eagleson, who also is chairman of Grant Street National Bank, retired in 1985 as chairman and CEO of Mellon Bank. He was chairman of Girard Bank, Philadelphia, from 1974 to 1985 . Eagleson has served as a director of the Private Investment Company, a multi-national private sector development organization headquartered in Singapore. He was a director of the International Monetary Conference and is a member of the advisory committee on East Asian Studies at Princeton University. In 1991, Eagleson was appointed Honorary Consul-General of Japan in Philadelphia by the Japanese Foreign Ministry. A Navy veteran, Eagleson earned an MBA degree from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School in 1951 and was awarded an honorary LL.D. from Lehigh in 1983. At Lehigh, Eagleson is chairman of the department of chemistry visiting committee, was Philadelphia area chairman of the New.Century Fund and a volunteer for annual giving and the bequests and trusts committee. Eagleson is married to the former Catherine West McLean. They are the parents of John M. Eagleson, '87, and of Elizabeth W. Eagleson. His brother is Peter S. Eagleson, '49. Previous winners of the prestigious "L-in-Life" Award include Dexter F. Baker, '50; William L. Clayton, '51; Jack J. Dreyfus, Jr., '34; Paul J. Franz, '44; Murray H. Goodman, '48; Edwin H. Gott, '62; Eugene G. Grace; Raymond Kravis, '24; Harry T. Martindale, '27; Eugene Mercy, Jr., '59; Norman Merksamer, '52; Herbert J. Siegel, '50; and Stanley M. Richman, '55.
