PLOTNICKI, Writers' Group Lehigh's Alumni Memorial Building will have a new "front porch" which will highlight the university's heritage thanks to a gift from an anonymous university alumnus who has been a major benefactor of the university. The stone plaza, which will be approximately 38 feet square, will serve as gateway to the university and will introduce visitors, especially prospective students and their parents, to the university's heritage. "Asa Packer, whose founding gift to Lehigh was the single largest donation to a university in his day, set the example for the many individuals who have made extraordinary contribution s to Lehigh," President Peter Likins noted. 'The plaza will give us a unique and visible way of acknowledging those donors who have made significant gifts to the university for financial aid, the top priority for the current campaign," said Eugene Mercy Jr., university trustee and Preserving The Vision financial aid chairman. "I'm very excited about the project because it will provide a more appropriate entrance to the campus," said Patricia G. Boig, director of admissions. "Visitors to campus will be able to begin to acquire a sense of Lehigh history. It will also be the starting point for our admissions tours." According to the donor, who has been a generous supporter of financial aid at Lehigh, Boig was instrumental in persuading him of the need to have an attractive area for prospective students and their families to gather. Limestone benches around the plaza will be engraved with the names of those who gave substantial gifts to the university. Special lighting fixtures and planters complete the design. The plaza was designed by Lehigh's facilities service office to complement the Alumni Memorial Building, according to Anthony L. Corallo, assistant vice president for facilities services. Construction of the plaza, which is estimated to cost about $130,000, began this week, and is expected to be finished in early December. Alvin H. Butz, Inc., is the contractor for the project. "The size of the plaza is the same scale as the space in the rotunda of the Alumni Building, " Corallo said. "We plan to use stone, limestone and concrete which will blend with the existing building." During the construction, access to the main entrance of the building will be limited and sometimes closed entirely. "We've notified all the occupants of the building about the construction," Corallo said, "and will be working around their schedules to maintain as much access as possible. For a brief period of inconvenience, the campus will gain an important improvement."
