Matthews, professor of government a' Lehigh, has been named Pennsylvania Professor of the Year by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). "Rick Matthews is a true gem of a professor and well deserves this award for excellence in undergraduate teaching," said Provost Alan W. Pense. "He has always understood that teaching is more than transmitting information. He has a unique gift in being able to stimulate students to learn critical thinking skills while they are becoming immersed in political theory. In the few years he has been at Lehigh he has already had a tremendous impact on this university, in the classroom, in scholarship, and in his activities to improve education." Matthews specializes in American political theory and political philosophy. Among his published works are a book on Thomas Jefferson's politics and another ex- "He has a unique gift in being able to stimulate students to learn critical thinking skills while they are becoming immersed in political theory" said Provost Alan W. In 1989 he received Lehigh's Stabler Award for excellence in teaching, for which students nominate faculty. "I'm thrilled that CASE has selected a faculty member from our college as the best teacher in the state," said Dean James D. Gunton. "Rick's dedication to the intellectual development of others is remarkable. I have been amazed by the outpouring of support from his students, and the eloquent statements regarding Rick's extraordinary ability in the classroom and his tremendous concern with helping students throughout their careers. This man has influenced many lives in profound and positive ways." Matthews relishes the challenge of teaching abstract political theory to 19- and 20-year-old students. However, while other areas in the state are hitting record highs, Lehigh Prof. Hayden Pritchard has collected pollen counts lower than the past two seasons.
