Zettlemoyer Albert C. Zettlemoyer, an internationally renowned surface and colloid chemist and a former university provost, died Sunday at his home in Bethlehem. Fortunate J. Micale, professor of chemistry and a colleague of Zettlemoyer's, said Zettlemoyer had been working in Sinclair Laboratory until two weeks ago. "He would.come in almost every day for about three hours," said Micale. "He had an active research project that was sponsored by DuPont, with which he had a longstanding involvement." Zettlemoyer, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Lehigh, joined the university faculty in 1941, the year he received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. He earned the B.S. and M.S. from Lehigh in 1936 and 1938. Zettlemoyer served as provost from 1969 to 1980, as vice president for academic affairs and as the university's first vice president for research from 1966 to 1969. He founded the National Printing Ink Institute and the Center for Surface and Coatings Research, both at Lehigh. The Center was renamed the Zettlemoyer Center for Surface Studies in 1987. In 1981, Zettlemoyer served as president of the American Chemical Society, the nation's largest organization of chemists and chemical engineers. He was honored by ACS in 1985 for contributions to society and to colloid chemistry, and he received the first Distinguished Service Award from the Lehigh Valley chapter of ACS in 1990. Zettlemoyer received honorary degrees from the Clarkson Institute of Technology and from the China Academy of Taiwan. He was honorary editor of the journal Advances in Colloid and Interface Science. campus memorial service for Albert C. Zettlemoyer is being planned. Details were unavailable at press time. In 1966, he received the Hillman Award in 1966 for outstanding service to Lehigh. His other honors included the Kendall Co. Award from the ACS, the Honor Scroll of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Chemists, the Elmer C. Voight Award from the Educational Council of the Graphic Arts Industry, the Ault Award for outstanding contributions to the printing ink industry, and the Mattiello Medal, from the Federation of Paint and Varnish Production Clubs. Sen. Bill Bradley to give Commencement Address U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley (D-NJ) will be the Commencement speaker at Lehigh University's graduation exercises on Sunday, June 2. The senior senator from New Jersey, he was a Rhodes scholar and played A 3sf professional basketball for ten years ^—^^■fcj before his election to the U.S. Bradley Senate in 1978. —~-^—^™— Bradley will receive an honorary doctoral degree from Lehigh during Commencement. This year for the first time the ceremonies will be held outside in the Murray H. Goodman Stadium (rain or shine). Lehigh Pres. Peter Likins and senior class president Susan A. Lanter jointly announced Bradley's acceptance. At Lehigh the senior class works in conjunction with the administration in selecting a Commencement speaker. "I'm very excited about the selection of Sen. Bradley as the Commencement speaker," said Lanter. "I think the whole class will be enthusiastic when they learn of this choice."
