Vol. 5, Issue 12 Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania November 19,1991 Sibling Rivalries By BARBARA LEE Photo by Bruce Winter David (left) and Michael Watkins R Leminiscent of civil wars which pit brother against brother, this Saturday, Lehigh freshman David Watkins will don brown and white as he sets out to meet his twin brother and Lafayette College freshman. Mike—clad in maroon and white. The two will be in opposite stands at the Lehigh-Lafayette football game. But these identical twin 18- year-old brothers from Rye Brook. N.Y. are not likely to let the conflict rip apart their family. In fact, they think attending the schools of the most-played college football rivalry is great fun. "It's so funny that our schools happen to be such huge rivals," David says. "You can bet I will be sitting on the Lehigh side and Mike will be on the other." Both brothers wanted to study business, but felt it was important for their own identities to attend different schools. On the recommendation of friends who were Lehigh alumni, Lehigh became David's first choice school, while his brother Mike preferred nearby Lafayette. "I think Lafayette is a nice size. I am really comfortable there," Mike explains. "You don't have these huge hills everywhere, and I think the campus is prettier." After Party 10:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m. / upper Grace Hall / Co-sponsored Late Night traded by the layout of Lehigh's campus. The twins enjoy visiting each other and attending parties together. And both are becoming involved in fraternities at their respective schools and feel that their social lives are very important. Mike has been in competitions on Lafayette's crew team, and David enjoys playing football and softball with fellow fraternity members.' Growing up in a small town, the brothers explain that it was a bit of a struggle to have their own identities until they attended separate high schools. Mike attended and graduated from the Brunswick School in Greenwich, Conn, while David graduated from Blind Brook High School in Rye Brook. But the brothers worked together many days after school at the Purchase Community House in Purchase, N.Y.. Both attended the community house's day camp each summer as they grew up, and then started lifeguarding there each summer. Mike explains being able to develop distinct personalities has helped them to get along better. "We're very different people," David adds, explaining that each . brother has his own circle of friends and very different tastes in music and clothing. In fact, they say the worst difficulty to overcome as twins has been sharing the same car. "When we would each have the car every other day," David explains, "we would try to run the gas down to the red and leave it for the other. It was like a game to see which of us would be mature and put gas in the car." But now that the car sits at home in Rye Brook, they say disputes have quieted—at least until Saturday. Mary J.
