Another win! Lehigh creams Colgate 52-7. Story in South Mountaineer. Peggy Vresics... believes people make Lehigh a very special place. q Welcome Parents! Activities for Upperclass Parents Weekend "W" Including The "South Mountaineer" "W" A mmr LehighWeek Vol.4, Issue 10 Lehigh receives $24 million grant The Department of Defense's 1990- 91 budget recently approved by the U. S. Congress has provided a one-year, $24- million grant to Competitive Technologies, Inc. (CTI), a non-profit corporation of Lehigh University, to help develop the U. S. Navy's "fleet of the future." The DOD grant includes $19 million to complete modifications to Lehigh's Mountaintop Campus research complex, and to upgrade research and testing equipment there that will be used for this and related projects. The remaining $5 million of the grant will be used to cover first-year development and testing costs through members of the industrial consortium. It is the purpose of this, grant to support industry-directed university research, technology transfer and university research infrastructure development. Peter Likins, Lehigh president, said, "This grant is the culmination of athree- year fund-raising campaign for the Mountaintop led by Lee lacocca, whose leadership was invaluable." CTI will administer the DOD grant contract, which calls for an industry-led consortium to develop the technology required for a U.S. Navy fleet that is faster, more maneuverable and reliable, and less expensive to manufacture, operate and maintain than the current fleet. A "fleet of the future" partnership of government,an industrial advisory board and Lehigh is being formed to provide the Navy with new base materials and designs for shipbuilding, innovative manufacturing systems, advanced information and logistics systems and proof of principle testing. Lehigh's role in the Navy program will be facilitated by the use of the new ATLSS multidirectional experimental testing center that was dedicated in 1989 as part of a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center. The new ATLSS test center is the only one of its type in the U.S. and has the largest load capacity of any proof-of-principle test facility in the world. In addition to strengthening Navy shipbuilding technology, the partnership's work under the grant is expected to enhance competitiveness of those industries involved in the Navy's shipbuilding program, and a special effort will be made to increase participation by small and medium-sized companies, particularly minority-owned companies. CTI was recently formed by Lehigh to serve as a catalyst for bringing See page 4 Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania November 6,1990 Czech President gives Cohen Lecture in April Peter Likins talks with Czecl last week. oslovakian President Vaclav Havel in Prague Art King Czechoslovakia Pres. Vaclav Havel has agreed to visit Lehigh in April to give the annual Cohen Lecture in International Relations on campus. His visit was announced by Lehigh Pres. Peter Likins at a meeting with reporters in his office Thursday afternoon. While in the Lehigh Valley Havel is also expected to visit Moravian College. Details of his trip are still being arranged. Likins added that as with any political leader, particularly a head of state, unforeseen events or domestic concerns may force a cancellation of Havel's visit at the last minute. Likins returned to campus Wednesday evening (Oct. 31) after a meeting with Havel in Prague on Monday afternoon (Oct. 29) to discuss the role of higher education in the post-revolution Czechoslovak society. They also explored possible cooperation on educational activities between Lehigh and Czech and Slovak institutions. See page 2 Campus goes batty on Halloween 1.
