Feigl, chairman of Lehigh's physics department, died suddenly of a massive heart attack on Saturday, Nov. 26. at the age of 52, in St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem. A campus memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 9, at 4:10 p.m. in Packer Memorial Church. The Rev. Richard A. Schware. Roman Catholic chaplain, will officiate. Professor Feigl's unexpected death has left the Lehigh community shocked and saddened. Sitting in his Sherman Fairchild Laboratory office last Tuesday, Feigl's longtime friend and colleague W. Beall Fowler, professor of physics, remembered a man who was committed to his students. Feigl "He took pride in his graduate students, especially the many students who left here and did well. Their success gave him the most pride," says Fowler. Fowler and Feigl did post doctoral work together in 1965 at the University of Illinois. Fowler joined the Lehigh faculty in 1966, and a year later Feigl came to Lehigh. The two often collaborated on research. Feigl was a specialist in the field of experimental solid state physics and electron spin resonance. Fowler and Feigl's relationship when beyond that of coworker. "He was just a great guy, and a very good friend." "I was chairman (of the physics department) for six years. If I needed to sound things out I always knew I could talk to him and get an unbiased and honest opinion," remarks Fowler. "He was also a fun guy. There was lots of joking." Just as he was respected by his colleagues, Feigl was also a mentor to his students, says Fowler. One of those students, Dan Xie, a graduate student in physics, remembers one of Feigl's favorite lines when things weren't going well, "He'd say, 'don't panic until I say panic.'" Xie added that Feigl never did say "panic". Another of Feigl's graduate students, Dave Kozuch, recalled his teacher's energy. "You'd catch his enthusiasm," he said. "He was a very good motivator." Feigl's students described him as always busy, yet having the time to work with them and answer questions, even if it meant working on Saturdays and Sundays. Xie said that even though Feigl was not feeling well, he came in to hear him make a research proposal on Nov. 22, a few days before he died. It includes information on crime awareness and prevention, campus housing, Lehigh's security staff and safety policies. The pamphlet pulls together into one publication information which was previously available from different University departments. It will be available to current students, faculty, staff and prospective students in accordance with the new Pennsylvania law, the "College and University Security Information Act." Crime prevention is stressed to Lehigh students from the moment they arrive on campus as freshmen during orientation sessions. Continuing educational programs are held throughout the year on such topics as safety awareness, self-defense, building security, substance abuse, sexual assault awareness and drunk driving. Unlike many schools which have only recently begun compiling crime statistics, Lehigh police have been reporting criminal activity on campus to the Pennsylvania State Police since 1981, using the guidelines established for the Uniform Crime Report (UCR). "As a matter of policy, the university generates these reports for police purposes, not public relations purposes, and therefore the categories and definitions used are those required by law enforcement agencies," said John W.
