Chairman Lee lacocca, '45, fielding questions and expressing his hopes for the next generation during three hours with Lehigh students on Oct. 28. PHOTOGRAPH By THEODORE ANDERSON Students Get Straight Talk From lacocca By Janine Haddad LehighWeek Intern It was a moment that would linger in the minds of some fortunate Lehigh students. Across the table engaging their class in discussion was Lee laccoca, expressing his hopes for the future, experiences from the past, and his interest in the new generation. Last week lacocca. Chrysler Corp. chairman and chief executive officer, informally addressed three enthusiastic groups: students in a section of English 97 (An American Dream), the Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering society and the Martindale Student Associates. Each group was permitted to ask Lehigh's successful alumnus questions within their alloted time of 45 minutes. Sitting comfortably in his chair, holding back no secrets, laccoca delved into his years at Lehigh. "I remember the top guy in my class at Lehigh." he said, then paused. "I look at where they went today and 1 muse. Why was I so different? Who knows? Maybe God only knows." Years later, laccoca no longer aspires to "conquer anymore mountains." But, if health permits, he wouldn't mind working till he turns 80 years old. Now laccoca seeks satisfaction in passing his wisdom on to Lehigh students and in promoting the return of America's economic zeal. The laccoca Institute is certainly a step in the right direction. For the English class, which is involved in a study of Iaccoca's books, laccoca represented a symbol of their "American Dream". They wanted to know where they fit in that dream. And what gave him the edge to make it? laccoca casually responded that to get ahead involves "outworking" the other guy. and an education can allow for a head start. "Make up your mind" on what you choose to accomplish, he told the students, and persist in trying to make that dream become reality. He admitted that hard work is involved, as well as luck.
