SUESS AT&T Grants $500,000 For Research Projects By Barbara Dolan College Relations Officer The AT&T Corporate Foundation has contributed more than $500,000 to several Lehigh research projects. In a luncheon meeting last month, Richard T. Roca, Lehigh Class of '66, executive director of Government Information Systems for AT&T, reviewed with Lehigh faculty and administrators the programs that will benefit from the AT&T grants. The computer science and electrical engineering department will recieve $345,000 in computer hardware and software including the latest version of AT&T's multi-user, multi-tasking microcomputer, the 3-BI5. Enhanced graphic terminals and the latest version of AT&T's widely accepted operating system, Unix, will also be installed. This equipment will be used for research in artificial intelligence, as well as undergraduate instruction. In support of the faculty, grants totaling $56,300 were given to engineering faculty members Harvey Stenger, associate professor of chemical engineering and Kyra Stephanoff, assosciate professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics. Two consortium groups within the university also will benefit from AT&T's financial support. The Center for Manufacturing Systems Engineering has received $30,000 for membership in its Industrial Advisory Board. The board is chartered with providing guidance and financial support to assist the faculty in maintaining research leadership and growth in manufacturing systems engineering technology. The Superconductivity Consortium under the auspices of the Materials Research Center at the university, provides its consortium members with shared research aimed at keeping a leading edge in the race for the development of a superconductor that has no resistance to electricity at room temperature. Also acknowledged was the AT&T Foundation $100,000 grant in support of the acquisition and renovation of Mountaintop Campus and AT&T matching gift grants to the university totaling $15,520. "Corporations like AT&T help make it possible for Lehigh to grow its programs to keep us on the leading edge of technology and provide our nation with well qualified, well educated professionals, be they engineers, accountants, or whatever," said President Peter Likins. "The AT&T- Lehigh partnership works well. The benefits are reciprocal and we appreciate AT&T's generosity." MBA'S HEAR ENTREPRENEURS Page 2 FOUNDER'S DAY Page 3 UNITED WAY'S $89,000 GOAL Page 5
