See preview stories Page 5 > Glenn J. Christensen Dr. Glenn J. Christensen Dies Former Lehigh University provost and vice president Dr. Glenn J. Christensen, 80, died last Saturday in the Blough Nursing Home, Bethlehem. He was the husband of Mildred M. (Balmer) Christensen. They resided at 452 N. New St., Bethlehem. Christensen had a 38-year-career in higher education, including such milestones as distinguished professor, a founder of Northampton County Area Community College and past chairman of its board of trustees, one of the founders and president emeritus of WLVT-TV Channel 39, and widely recognized educational consultant and lecturer. He was a 1935 graduate of the College of Wooster in Ohio. He received a doctorate in English from Yale University in 1939, the same year he joined the English Department at Lehigh University. He became an assistant professor in 1942. He was named associate dean of Lehigh's College of Arts and Science with the rank of full professor in 1955 and was promoted to dean of the college in 1956, a post he held until 1962, when he was named provost and vice president. Upon retiring in 1969 to return to teaching, he was named distinguished professor. One of the founders of Northampton County Area Community College, begun under the name Gov. George Wolf Community College in 1966, Christensen was appointed its first chairman of trustees, an accomplishment he would repeat for 10 consecutive terms, until resigning in February 1977. Christensen in 1965 was founding president of the Lehigh Valley's public television station WLVT, and according to current WLVT President Sheldon P. Siegel, was one of the driving forces that put the station on the air. Upon hearing of Christensen's death, Siegel said,"Put simply, if it were not for the vision and energy of Dr. Christensen ... Channel 39 would not be here today." In 1979 Christensen retired from the board of WLVT and later that year was named its first director emeritus. In 1959 the University presented him the Hillman Award, given annually to the faculty member who has done most for the university. Services will be private. The Wallace M. Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden St., Bethlehem, is in charge of arrangements. Lehigh Fraternity's Donation Supports Martindale Center Program The alumni association of Lehigh University's chapter of Phi Delta Theta, a national social fraternity, has donated $1,500 for the second straight year to Lehigh's Martindale Center for the Study of Private Enterprise. Prof. J. Richard Aronson, director of the center, said the funds would be used to support its "executive-in-residence" program, and current Phi Delta Theta brothers will participate in activities related to the program this spring. Ken Smith, mayor of Bethlehem, a Lehigh graduate and a member of the fraternity's alumni board of trustees, praised the action of the board and Phi Delta Theta brothers. "Fraternities recently have been getting a bad rap, and sometimes justifiably," said Smith. "My experience at Lehigh, however, was very positive. My fraternity experience taught me how to interact socially in a positive and responsible manner. "I'd like to see other fraternities view Phi Delta Theta's interaction with the Martindale center as a challenge to channel their resources into constructive academic activities." Phi Delta Theta will host a reception in April for the Martindale center's executive-in- residence, Richard Dauch, executive vice president for management for Chrysler Corp. Lars Novak, president of the fraternity, said brothers will assist in promoting the executive's visit by distributing posters around campus and placing advertisements and announcements in the student and local newspapers. "This kind of activity is not just good publicity for Phi Delta Theta, it's good for all fraternities," said Novak. "Every day it seems you read something negative about fraternities, so we're trying to help change that image." Music At Lehigh Presents Winter Concert This Sunday Music at Lehigh will present its annual Winter Concert on Sunday, March 6 at 3 p.m. in Lamberton Hall. It is open to the public free of charge. The concert will feature the Wind Ensemble, directed by Jung-Ho Pak, and the Varsity Band, conducted by Peter Schultz. Among the works to be performed are Brahms' "The Academic Festival Overture," Copland's "El Salon Mexico," Haydn's "Trumpet Concerto," a piece by Bach and a selection of marches.
