Photography by PAM LOTT Ferko-Adams Lehigh Hosts Conference On Women's Health The seventh annual Women's Health Conference will be held at Lehigh University on Saturday, March 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. "Charting Your Course for a Healthy Lifestyle" is the theme for this year's conference, which will include 24 workshops on health issues. The conference is open to the public. It is sponsored by the Women's Alliance of Lehigh and WomanCare of The Allentown Hospital. Denice Ferko-Adams, a registered dietitian, will be the keynote speaker and will discuss designing a healthier lifestyle. A nutrition consultant for the Lehigh Valley Coalition for Cancer Control and Sports Medicine Lehigh Valley, she has also developed programs for Mack Trucks, Air Products and Bethlehem Steel. In 1986 she received a state award as the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year. Friday, February 26 is the deadline for registration. Space is limited, and late registration will be accepted only through March 4 on a space-available basis. Participants will be able to attend three of 24 workshops offered on such topics as stress, nutrition, exercise, dealing with the loss of a loved one, skin care and plastic surgery. Other topics to be addressed include rape, contraception, childbirth, menopause and the role of women as mothers and daughters. In conjunction with the Health Conference, a special mother/ daughter weekend is planned at the University. Women attending the conference are encouraged to invite their mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, aunts, friends, etc. The conference registration fee, which includes lunch, is $5 for Lehigh students and $ 15 for faculty and staff. Seek Economic Benefits, Likins Tells Researchers Boston— The economy and global competitiveness will drive U.S. science and technology policy for at least the next decade, so researchers should focus on the economic benefits of their work to attract funding, Lehigh University's president said Sunday (Feb. 14). Speaking at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston, Lehigh President Peter Likins made this point while addressing the controversial subject of the new Science and Technology Centers that President Reagan directed the National Science Foundation to establish this year. His comments followed the recent announcement that the fiscal 1988 NSF budget for all research centers and individual investigator proposals would grow only 3.3 percent, leaving Continued On Page 3 >
