Story on Page **^ Colonial League Set To Expand In 1990 By Ron Ticho Spoils Information Director Lehigh University acknowledges that an agreement in principle has been reached by the Colonial League to expand both its membership and play in sports in addition to football starting in the 1990-91 season. The announcement was made by David W. Ellis, President of Lafayette College, and Chair of the league's Council of Presidents. The United States Military Academy and Fordham University have agreed in principle to join the Colonial League and the league will expand to 21 sports — 11 for men and 10 for women, according to Alan W. Childs, Executive Director of the Colonial League. The league anticipates playing a full competitive schedule beginning with the 1990-91 season. The Colonial League was founded in 1984 as a football league comprised of Lehigh, Bucknell, Colgate, Davidson, Holy Cross and Lafayette. Plans call for official ratification of the expanded membership to take place with the signing of letters of agreement in September. Specific details with regards to league scheduling and arrangements are being worked on. "The addition of Army and Fordham to our league establishes a base of competition from which to build," commented John C. Whitehead, Lehigh's Director of Athletics. "These institutions have an old and established tradition of excellence in both athletics and academics. The expansion of sports among Colonial League members provides ground for exciting competition and the further development of rivalries." "We are bringing together a group of institutions of higher learning which enjoy high standards of admission and achievement, as well as commitments to intercollegiate athletics," said Peter Likins, President of Continued On Page 3> Duke Succeeds McCaffery As Head Basketball Coach David Duke has been named head mens basketball coach at Lehigh University. Duke has been promoted from assistant coach to head mentor with the departure of Fran McCaffery who has been named an assistant coach at the Univeristy of Notre Dame. The announcement was made at an August 1. 1988 press conference by John C. Whitehead, Lehigh's Director of Athletics. "I'm very excited about the challenge and feel confident that we can continue our great success," said Duke. "I feel we have a solid nucleus of returning players along with an exciting group of freshman. I'm very happy that Lehigh is giving me this opportunity."
